Be it known that I, RUDOLPH M. HUNTER, a citizen of theUnited States, and residentof Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction of through-valve especially designed as a blow-oil valve, or where quick action is required. I
In general construction, my invention essentially consists of a body having a valve chamber provided Wlth- .ports in alinement, associated with. controlling means for the outlet port comprising a rocking spindle extending through the the. outlet port. and provided with an annular collar portion on its inner end seating upon a packing ring on the inner face of the body, the said spindle being yieldingly drawn axially outward by a 0011 spring arranged outside of the valve chamber, to insure sealing of its collar, and said rocking spindle operating a lateral arm reaching over the outlet port and section; and Fig.

My invention also comprehends other'features of construction which, with those above stated, are fully described hereinafter and more particularly defined in the claims.

In other words, the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe, as well as the ports 8 and 12, may be all of the same diameter, but by allowing the fluid to converge in passing through the port 8, it will be delivered into the discharge pipe through the port 12 without being caused to directly impinge upon the edges of the port or the valve seat surface 13. This is especially important in high pressure work. .;It is of course manifest that the inlet pipe may diameter than the area of the port 8, and. this is indicated by the construction shown in Fig. 3. The" pivotal part of the arm 23 is secured to'the rocking spindleand preferably provided with a socket, head 16 of the spindle, which is so formed as to cause thearm to be positively oscillated by any rotation of the spindle itself just as though it was integral with the spindle. This spindle is provided with a collar 15 immediatel to one side of the head 16 and arm 22. The spindle 1& fits through-a bearing aperture 19 in the part 2. of the casing, and is surrounded by a packing ring 21, which .is preferably of coppe'rand arrangedin an annular I recess 20in the casing and immediately under the collar 15 of the spindle,

In this manner, the collar makes a rotary packed joint upon the packing,4and the. normal tightness of the joint is increased by the pressure in the valve chamber on the inside of the valve casing, said pressure forcing the collar upon the packing. Moreover, in this construction, the spring is fully shielded from direct action of the steam or hot water, and will therefore maintain its elasticity to a greater extent than where it is exposed to the hot passing fluid. The bushing 32 is shouldered as shown, and surrounding it is a spring 33 which forces the bushing outward against the hub of the operating lever 18, which latter is fitted over the square end of the spindle and held in place by a washer 35 and cotter pin 36. The action of this spring 33, acting through the bushing and the operating lever 18, tends to hold the collar 15 tightly upon the packing 21 to assist in making and maintaining a steam and water tight joint, and at the same time preventing any rattling due to wear. This spring 33 is outside of the valve chamber and hence is not acted upon by the hot steam and water therein; andmore'over,
may be replaced without opening the valve case. The rotation of the bushing 32 may be prevented by the employment of a screw 3 1, the end of which may enter a slot in the edge of the bushing, but the pressure should not be sufficient to prevent adjustment of the of the spring.
From the foregoing construction, it will floe evident-that a compact and practical construction for a quick-acting valve is provided, and, that the heavy operating or swinging arm 22 is supported independently of the valve seats, the latter being governed 27 which may be formed of bronze or brass, and these being light and freely adjustable, will insure at all times a tighter closure with less wear upon the seats than where the arm 22 is employed as forming a bearing with the inlet seat, as has heretofore been the customary practice. Furthermore, this construction of valve is reversible, as there is provided a clearly defined valve piece for both ports, and in which both operate under exactly the same conditions. It will also be understood that as the heavy arm 22 is guided at both ends, it maintains an accurate alinement with the operating stem, and removes all objectionable bending strain the longitudinal r bushing under the action upon the said spindle, and consequently renular packed jointon the inside of the case and in the valve chamber thereof, and this joint is maintained in tight condition by a coil spring on the outside'of the valve casing surrounding the spindle, said spring pressing at one end upon the casing and at the other to applying pressure upon the hub which constantly tends to move the spindle outward and maintain the aforesaid tight o nt; and it will be further seen that the spindle so formed operates a swinging arm It will be observed that with my improvelever for creating a force ing formed of a a plane parallel to the plane which is recessed to receive the cylindrical body part of the valve piece for the outlet port which is spring pressed upon its seat, said valve piece arranged upon the same side of the arm as is the spindle. The con struction of the valve of the outlet port is such that t e spring is shielded and received in a hollow recess in the back of the valve piece, the surrounding annular wall thereof received in a circular aperture of the swinging arm, the construction insuring aiyielding contact of the valve piece upon its seat to compensate for wear and permit independent seating, said operation not being interfered with by the spring action upon the spindle employed for rocking the arm and valve iec'e.
Whlle I, have shown the construction of the valve in the form which I deem most preferable in practice, I do not, restrict myself to the details thereof, as these may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having iiow deczribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
1. In avalve, the combination of the casplurality of parts bolted together arid; providing an internal chamber having iplet and outlet ports opening respectivelyfthrough the opposite faces and terminatin' in opposed vale seats, a spindle journaled; 1n one of the parts of the casing to one side of the port therethrough, a swinging arm carried on the inner {end of the spindle so as to be moved thereby and having an aperture through its free end in alinement with the ports, two valve'pieces of the same 'crosssection respectively work ing in contact with the valve seats and having recessed hubs of the same diameter fitting the aperture in the swinging arm said hubs of a depth approximately equal to one-half the thickness of the swmging arm so as to be wholly independent of each other and a spring disposed between the valve pieces and inclosed thereby for pressing the valve pieces upon their respective seats.
2. In a valve, the combination'of the casing formed of'a plurality of parts bolted together and providing an internal chamber having inlet and spectively through the opposite faces and terminating in opposed valve seats and also having a guide in its side wall extending in of the valve seats, a spindle journaled in one of the parts of the casing to one side of the port therethrough,"a swinging arm carried on the lnner end of the spindle so as to be moved thereby and having an aperture through its free end in alinement with the ports the said swinging arm also having its free end provided-with a rejection guided by the guide on {the side 0 the internal chamber for supportmg said outer surface of the casing,

In a valve, the combination of the casing formed of a plurality of parts bolted together and providing-an internal chamber having inlet and outlet portsopening re spectively through the opposite faces and terminating in opposed valve seats, a" spindle journaled in one of the parts of the casing to one side of the port therethrough having an annular collar adapted to seat upon the inner part of the casin to form a tight joint, a bushing surroundlng the spindle and guided in an aperture in the open face of the casing,'-an arm secured tothe end of the spindle for operating it and against which the bushing exerts a pressure, a spring surrounding the bushing for forcing it outward against the operating arm for causing the collar of the spindle to make a tight oint in the casing, a swinging arm carried on the inner end of the spindle so as to be moved thereby and having an aperture through its free end in alinement with the ports,- two valve pieces respectively Working in contact wlth the valve seats and having hubs fitting the aperture in the swinging arm, and a spring between the valve pieces and inclosed thereby for pressing the valve pieces upon "their respective seats.
4. In a valve, the combination of a body casing having an internal chamber formed with inlet and outlet ports, means to control the outlet port spring pressed thereon, a, spindle extending through the casing and provided with a lateral arm'for actuating said means said spindle restricted to rotate in a limited are less than half a circle having an annular collar for making a tight joint on the inside of a casing, an arm secured to the outer end of the spindle for rotating it, a bushing surroundin the spindle and guided in an aperture 1n the and a spring arranged in the said aperture and extending around the spindle for forcing the bushing outwardly to impart an outward spring action to the spindle for holding its collar armsecured to the outer end of the spindle for rotating it, and a spring extending opposed valve around the spindle with one end pressing against the casing for forcing the spindle outwardly to impart an. outward spring action thereto for holding its collar tightly upon its seat,
6. In a valve, the combination of a body composed of a plurality of parts secured toether to form an internal chamber provided with an inlet and an outlet opening in alinement through the said chamber, the inlet having an expansion chamber formed as a part of the body and of greater diameter than the inlet openin for the fluid and shaped to provide inc ined walls converg ing in, the direction of the axis of the inlet port where it opens into the internal cham ber, whereby the flow of the fluid is given a conical direction so that it shall pass through the outlet port without injury to its walls, and means within the internal chamber for controlling the fluid passing through the ports.
7 In a valve, the combination of a casing formed of a plurality of parts bolted together and providing an internal chamber having. inlet and outlet ports respectively through, opposite faces and terminating in seats and also having a guide in the side wall and extending in a. plane parallel to the plane of the valve seats, a spindle journaled in one of the parts of the casing to the side of the port therein farthest from the side guide, a swinging arm carried by the spindle so as to be moved thereby said swinging arm having its freeend guided upon the guide so as to be supported against movement toward either valve seat, and valve means movable with the swinging arii for controlling the flow through the ports.
8. In a valve, the combination of a casing having a valve chamber and inlet and outlet ports thereto, a spindle journaled in the casing to one side of the outlet port and having an annular collar on its inner portion seated upon the inner wall of the valve chamber, an arm Withinthe valve chamber movable with the spindle when rotated, said arm having a bearing portion at its free end for a valve piece, a spring pressed valve piece sleeved in the bearing of the arm so asto be moved laterally with it while maintaming spring pressure upon the outlet port valve seat, an arm secured to the outer end of the spindle to rotate it, and a spring coiled about the spindle and arranged between the casing and arm for imparting an outward spring pressure and compensating for wear.
9. In a valve, the combination of a casing having a valve chamber and inlet and outlet ports thereto and also having a spindle bearing and annular packing recess to one side of the outlet port, an annular packing in'the packing recess, a spindle journaled in the bearlng and having an annular-collar resting upon the annular packing, a spring actuated valve piece for controlling the outlet port, an arm movable within the valve chamber by the spindle for operating the spring actuated valve piece, a lever outside of the valve chamber and its casing for rotating the spindle, and a coil spring surrounding the spindle and arranged between the casing and the lever for insuring the collar of the spindle maintaining a tight joint with the packing, the construction providing independent spring action of the spindle and valve piece in the same direction. 10. outlet ports, a spring pressed val ve piece to control the flow through the valve chamher, a spindle and arm-therefor journaled in the casing and extending within the valve chamber for moving the valve piece transversely into alinement with the ports, said spindle having an annular collar for making a tight joint upon the inside of the chamber around the spindle bearing, means on the outer end of the spindle for rotating it, and a coil spring surrounding the spindle and arranged at the outside of the casing for -forcing the spindle outward and maintaining its annular collar in tight cooperation with its seat, the spring actions of the spindle and valve piece being simultaneously operative without interference.
