As another important teature of my invention I provide interlocking partsonthe cover and operating im-ehanisni of the switch, these parts preventing removal and restoration of the cover except when the switch is in open position. Thus by providing a construction wherein the cover is re movable only when the switch open and having means for onnecting the line terminals from the ch when the cover is removed, there is practically no danger of a short circuit occurring or of the operator being injured when the parts on the interior oi the inclosure art EXQOFfli.
My invention also re. les in certain other novel 'l'eatures of construction and arrange ments oi parts which will be described in the specification and set forth in the ap pended claims.

This opening and closing of the switch with a snap action reduces arcing to a minimum and renders the use of the switch comparatiwly safe even in buildings having inflammable material.
To limit the volume of current passing through the switch and to' avoid the necessity for fuses arranged in the open exterior to the switch, I provide fuses on the interior of the inclosure and thei arraugel'neut and n'njn'iner of connection will now be explained. These fuses, one of which is provided for each conductor of the system, are shown at 49 4.9 and 49 and, as will be seen, are anged in the cover 11 of the 'inclosure and are adapted to be removed with the cover and. to be disconnected from the switch and contact terminals when the cover is removed. As will be seen from Figs. 1 and of the drawings, the fuses are clamped tween insulating blocks 50 and 50 which are secured to plates of fastened by screws to the underside of the cover 11. The. fuses are adapted to be connected to the line terminals and to the switch or contact terminals respectively when the cover is placed in position, and to be disconnected from the line and switch tern'iinals when the cover is removed, by twosets of spring jaws 53S and :i-il. The jaws 3 are secured at their bases by screws 55 to a woodcnor other insulating cross bar at) which extends betwcenthe side bars 18 and 18* of the supporting frame 17 and is secured to such side bars by screws 57. Furtli-flnore the switch is safe from the standpoint of injury. to the operator, for the reason that not only are the line conductors disconnected from the contact mechanism of the switch when the cover is removed, but it is impossible to remove or replace'thc cover unless the switch open. In this manncr the danger of the operator short circuitin any of the live parts or oil being injured 1s )ractically eliminated.
The fact that the entire switch mechanism can be removed as a unit without disturbing the conductor terminals is a valuable feature for the reason that the switch can be cleaned or repaired much more conveniently and with less danger to the operator than with the present construction of switches. This is true particularly inasmuch as the contact mechanism is by the removal of the cover disconnected from the line or current supplying conductors and is rendered dead before the switch unit is removed from the tank. By disposing the detachable connection between the contact members associated with the line terminals and the fixed contacts of the removable switch-unit, or, at least, the major portion of such contact members, in the upper portion of the inclosure, that is, the portion of greater horizontal cross-sectional area, the necessary oil-containing space for properly immersing the active, circuit-rupturing contacts and the amount of oil for the same, and the weight of material of the casing may be reduced to a minimum.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent t- 1. In combination, in a switch, movable and stationary cont-act members, an operating shaft for the movable contact members, said movable and stationary contact members being suspended from said shaft and bodily movable therewith, an operating han 'dle mounted on the shaft and movable relatively thereto, a spring having operative conncctions'with the shaft and handle, a pair of pawls each acting at times to temporarily hold the shaft against movement while the handle is being moved a predetermined amount and energy is being stored in the spring, and means movable with the handle for tripping said pawls so that the shaft will be turned and the switch will. be opened or closed with a snap action.
In combination, in a switch, movable and stationary contact members, an operating shaft for said movable contact members, an operating handle mounted on the shaft, a spring sin-rounding the shaft, a. member secured to theshaft and provided with a laterally projecting portion extending between the ends of the spring and having a. pair of notches, a member movable with the handle and having a laterally projecting portion also extending between the ends of the sprin pawls coinierating with the notched member, one of the pawis engaging one of the notches so as to hold the shaft against movementwhile the handle is moved a predetermined amount in one direction and energy stored in the spring, and the other pawl engag ng the other notch and holding the shaft against movement when the handle is moved in the opposite direction and energy is stored in the spring, and said member movable with lhc handle serving to trip the pawls so that the switch will be opened or closed with a snap action.
3. In a switch, the combination of an'inclosure adapted to contain insulating fluid, a supporting t 'ame removably mounted within said inclosure, cooperative movable and stationary contact members and oper ating mechanism therefor carried by said frame, said contact members being normally suspended in insulating fluid in said inclosurc, a I'Lll'lOVzlblQ cover for said inelosure, line terminals disposed within said inclosure and above the normal fluid-containing portion thereof, detachable connections between said line terminals and certain of said stationary contact members, and cooperative interlocking members associated with said cover and. said o 'ie'rating mechanism, said interlocking members preventing the removal of said' cover when the switch is closed, and said frame, contact members and operating mechanism therefor being removable from said inclosure as a unit when the cooperative contact members are in circuit open condition and the cover removed, and said detachable connections being broken on removal of said unit from said inclosure.
4. In a switch, the combination. of an inclosure adapted to contain insulating fluid, switch meclninism rcn'lovably supported in position in said inclosure and including cooperative relativcly movable contact members and operating mechanism thereon in the form of a self-contained unit, said contact members being normally suspended in the normal fluid containing portion of said inclosirc, line terminals within said in.- closure and above the normal fluidcontaining portion thereof, detachable connections between said line terminals and certain of said contact members, and means operative to insure that said unit is removable from said inclosure only when the coti 'icrative contact members are in circuit-open condilion. said detachable connections bein broken on. the removal of said unit from said inclosure.

In a switch, an inclosure having lateral extensions on two opposite sides, a removable switch unit comprising a supporting 'l'ralnc, movable and stationary contacts and operating mechanism, said extensions having secured thereto insulating supporting bars, a plurality of members supported by members engagingin said jaws whereby the i unit may be renamed without (:listurbing the terminals.

I11 combination, a receptacle having its lower portion of smaller horizontal crosssectional area than its upper port-ion, line terminals disposed in operative position in the portion of said receptacle of greater cross-sectional area, switch mechanism comprising fixed and movable contacts and a support therefor removable from said re-' .ceptacle as a. unit, said fixed contacts comprising portions engagcable by said movable contacts, and means operative to conduc tively connect said line terminals with the portions of said fixed contacts with. which said movable contacts are engageable when said switch mechanism is in operative position in said receptacle, the movable contacts and the portions of said fixed contacts engageable thereby being disposed in the portion of said receptacle of reduced crosssectional area when in operative position in said receptacle.

In a, switch, an inclosing casing hav ing a lateral extension adjacent the upper edge thercofbterminal contact members and an insulating si pport therefor mounted on saidcxtension, and switch mechanism com prising relatively movable contacts and op erating mechanism therefor removable from said casing as a unit, said switch unit including conductive connections from cer tain of its contacts detachably connected to said terminal contact members when said switch unit is in. operative position. within said casing.
