w. P. HAMMOND. INDICAUNG SIGNAL FIOR VEHICLES. AFPLICATLQN FILED ULY 7, 19H.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEFIoE.
WILLIAM re. HAMMOND, or Passaic, NEW JERSEY.
i INDICATING-SIGNL FOR VEHICLES.
Specification ofReissued Letters Patent. Reissued Sept, 25, 1917.'
Original No. 1,199,545, dated September 26, 1916, Serial No. 599,527, filed December 27, 1910. Application forreissue led July 7, 1917. Serial No. 179,293.
To ci! fav/fiom zt-may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. HAMu Mone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident oit Passaic, county of Passaic, and 'State of -lew Jersey, have invented certain nevi and useful. Improvements in Indicating-Signals 'for Vehicles, of Which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying-sheet of drawing, is a concise 'and complete description. f
My invention relates to indicating devices for use in connection with road vehicles to indicate the direction in which a vehicle is about to turn.
The object of my invention is .to provide a simple device of this character having an indicating!r symbol or` symbols and means for illuminating the same in such a man-` ner as to indicate either one of two directions.
Referring to the accompanying draw;
ings, in which I have illustrated one preferable embodiment ot my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, it being understood that I do not limit or restrict my- Self to the precise construction illustrated, but, on the contrary, may depart therefrom and construct the device differently and still come Within the spirit and scope' of my invention.
Figur bodimont of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar vieivwith the front removed. Fig. 3 is a .niodiication of my invention.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the respective views, and -"lindicates an oblong box-like structure divided by partitions #2-- into three compartments. y
indicates"v a removable front havinp; out therefrom a portion of its body, the configuration )t the-cutout portion taking the form of an indicating symbol, here shown as a double headed arrow, the spear shaped heads beine; indicated at! 5 and ('hile I have illust-rated an arrow indicating;`v symbol, Yit is apparent that l other different symbolsk may be employed,
` such, for instance. as a. hand or hand havl .is a perspective View of one em-V are controlled by arsuitable switch -7- having,rv a two-throw switch' blade --8- adapted to coperate with contacts filland -10- to direct the current to the lights 'Ihesev indicating devices are intended to be attached to both the front and rear of the vehicle, and` are operated in substantially the following manner, to indicate to the drivers .of other vehicles and pedestrians the vdirection in` which a turn is to be made. By turning a switch blade onto Contact -lU- the current from batn tery #9# is sent through circuits 11, -l1-, -l and -l?, illuminating lamps and -G- bringing into sight the arrow or symbolv pointing in vdirection to the left, assuming; thatrthe device is at- ,taclied vto 'the rear `oit' the vehicle.- -When the switch blade vv-'-8- is thrown over onto Contact -10-' light --6- will go out and -6 will illuminate and the circuit will and #13. Under this operation thearrow or symbol Will point to the right, indicatimt.r that a turn to the right is .con-
y 'templatcd blinds are operated by a pull upon suitable operating cords attached thereto, and the single light behind is sullicient 'to illuminate the Whole of the signal indication. l/Vhen the operating cord is released.; the blind Will close under action of the spring --l6--. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new herein and desire to secure bv Letters Patent, is
l. A direction indicator 'for vehicles, including a cover plate provided With a pluof independent` transparent areas,
compleinental design elernents, upon tlie transparent areas, said deslgn elements having such alrelation -to each other that sep lected sets thereof taken independently .form complete. direction indicating designs, Iinde pendent illuminating means behind .the re-v spective areas 'of 'the transparent plate, means'forV confining ,the light -frorneach illuminating means to the ypartinilstr -area of the transparent plate, and selective means for controlling the independent .illuminat- Aing means whereby any selected set of :the
to indiv ments 'of the design .being of a 'comple- 'mental lnature and [having such a :relation to each' other that selective sets thereof taken independently form complete direc tion indicatingV designs, independent ,illnrninoting means .behind the respective trnns- .parent areas-(of the-cover plate, 'means for confining Athe `light from each illuminating means to the particular' area of the cover plate, and selective means for controlling` the independent illuminating means where.-
design can beilluminated, 4 I
3. direction indicator :for vehicles and the .like including a transparent lplate subby any vselected set of-theelenient of' .tl1e' j divided into acentralarea endend areas; Said tions thereof .over the dii'erentareas platelieing provided with a unitary ,design `.extending over all ofthe areas and tlieporhavin such a relation toeach .otliertllat the centrzfl portion in combination with `either of .the
