ITED STATES,
reclaim? mission" JOHN W. KERR, or ORLANDO, FLORIDA, essmneiet To IKIJRR nDJUs'rAnrlE s'rnAr QUICKLY-ADJUSTABl E srmnnrx A To all whom it may concern "Be it known that I, JOHN V. Kenn, citi- "zen of the United States, residing at Orlando, in the county ofOrange and State of Florida", have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quickly Adjustnble Stirrup-Leathers, of which the following is "a specification.
The'present invention relates in general 101 to harness, and more particularly to -a :quickly adjustable buckleless leather orstrap connection for stirru'ps and, the like. the object of the invention being to provide a strap connection of this character which embodies novel features of construction Wher'eby'the necessity of using it buckle and weakening the strap'by a number o't open- "in'gs therein is'entirely eliminated and tension" is utilized to lock the strap in an art justable position, the strap connection being :sus'ceptiblehof being instantly lengthened or shortened as required. f
A further object the invention is to provide a strain conn'ectionof this charm-ten which issimple and inexpensite in its con-j" struction', which will positively Hold an. udi justment. under the most trying emiditions of usc, and which will Withstand hard usage without dungciy of breaking or becoming Mr duly wornt \V'ith the. invention consists in certain novel combinations and az 'i'angements ot' the parts as will -more"full ,appcar as thedescription pro- (feeds, the novel. features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims. 7
For Man understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following d1.- scriptitin and aeco upnnying drawing, in 40 which 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stirrup leather constructed in nccord tinre "with the invention, showing the manner of grasping the same to lengthen or shorten the leather. Sneeification of Reissued Letters Patent. Ragissued July 21, 1914 1913, Serial No. 783,365. Application for reissue filed June 5, 1914. Serial No. 843,576.
means of friction in contradistinction to one locked by tension portions being broken away, and Fig. 5 is a detail View of the. frietion member employed in Fig. l.
Corres )on'ding and like parts are referred min the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing hr the same reference characters. U
For conrenience in illustrating the invention it has been shown as embodied in a; stirrup leather, although it will be understood that the invention is notrestrictedte stirrup leathers, hutmay be utilized in connection with-eheak reins, traces, backbands, girths, or wherever t quickly adjustable strap connec ion of this character would be desirable.
Referring; to the drawing, the numeral 1" designates the supporting ring or eye attl'le upper end of the stirrup leather, 2 the stir-run proper which is of the conventional constrrrrtinn and is formed with the stirrup eve 3. and 4 the connecting, linl'z- The strap 5 is threaded thremgh the supportingring at e, 5 l the stirrup eve 3, and the connecting in! 4. one emio'f the strap being secured to One f the end eyesivhile the ot-h'erend of the is secured to the connecting li-nl? 4. In the present instance, the'uppe'r end,"
of the strap 5 is secured at 6 to the connecting link 4. From this point the strap is extended npwzirdly at 5' threaded through the supporting" ringor eye 1 and carried downwardly at 5", threaded through the eye 3, and carried upwardly at 5-, tl Euler? through the connecting link 4 and carried downwardly at 5, the opposite end of the strap being secured at T'to the stirrup eye-3.
With the foregoingconstruction it will be seen that there are. three thielmesses of leather betweenthe connectin .link 4 and the stirrup eye 3, and two thicknesses-of leather between the conneetinglink4 and 1-. A suitable retaining the supporting rin band or keeper 8 0% leather or other suitable material surrounds the three thicknesses of leather between the connecting link'4 and the stirrup 2 so as to hold the sametogether.
'Wi th-.t his manner of loopingthe strap, a
tirrup While I have illustrated and described both a tension and a friction controlled strap, it will be understood that there are 6 strap is securely held at G where it passes 7 through the connecting link 4. 'At'the ten sion oint B, it will be observed; that the loope portion of the strap which is threadstructingthe looped strap connection and 10 t e end i' of the strap which is connected Having thus described-the invention, what I 0 arm as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A connectingmember comprising a continuous length of flexible material having a ink to wh1ch one end of said materm] is connected, said materlal thence meat, and producing a very effective lock at this point upon placing the device under 45 tension. The'two points of tension produce a. positive lock which causes the strap to hold an adjustment, regardless of the amount of pressure-which is applied to the stirrup or e the tension to which the strap is subjected. 20 However, by grasping the portion 5 of the gas indicated by dotted lines upon Fig. l 1 igg length of the stirrup leather may be iustn tly Increased or decreased as found desirabl'e. By "pulling downwardly upon "the 25 'portionfif of the strap and movingthe conto form a loop, thence extended in a reverse direction, beyond said link and bent to form 7 another loop, thence extended to said link and passed through the same, and the end thence extended to a point within said last named loop and means for holding said end in sliding engagement with said last named loop.
2. A connecting member comprising a continuous length of flexible material having a connecting link to which one end of said material is connected, said material thence passing from said 'link to a point andbent to form a loop, thence extended in a reverse direction beyond said link and bent to form another loop, thence extended to said link and passed through the same from the outside, and the end thence extended to a point within said last named loop, and lying in alinemcnt with the two sides thereof and means for holding said end in sliding engagement-with saidlast named loop. t a 3. A quickly adjustable buekleless leather for stirrups and the like, including end attaching members,,an intermediate connect -ing link, and a flat strap, one end of the strap being secured to the connecting link and the strap being then carried towardi'one of the end attaching members and threaded t rough the same, carried to the o posite end attaching member and threaded tiirough 3 p lapwardlyupon the portion 5 of the 5 is-Imcreased. The ad ustment can be-made 40 nd'iweakening the strap by a series of open 'erein, and neither are there any free strep-ends to project outwardly and cause A' frictionally controlledstrap in c0htra- 45 'stinetion a; tension controlled strap is shoWnbygFigs. 4 and 5, in which 1 design'a-tes the supporting ring, 2 the'stirrup, and 3.5 th stiri-upeye The friction'ring 4 is shown asiembodying a number of cross bars th I 50' through which =the stra may be threaded. threaded through the same, and then carried i he Strap-,9 has one en thereof secured at 10 to the friction ring 4, is carried upwardly 9", vthreaded through the supportto the stra assing through the same.
' 4. A quick y adjustable buckleless leather for stirrups and the like including end attaching eyes, a connecting link, ia-looped strap havingfone end thereof secured to the connecting link, the said stra' being then carried to one of the end attachin eyes,
threaded through the same and carrie tothe opposite end attaching eye, threaded'through the second end attaching eye and carried to the connecting link, threaded through the 55 threaded through the stirrup eye 3 and carried-u wii'irdlyat 9, the end thereof being secu regafi 'll to the supporting eye 1, while tin-intermediate part of the portion 9 is threaded through the crossba'rs of the fric- 60 tion ring 4. By releasing the tension in thestrap so as to loosen the friction grip* of the strap upon the ring4', the said ring 4 can be raised and lowered upon the portion,9 of the strap so as to increaseor de- 65 crease, the length of the stirrup leather; l attaching eye to wh 1ch 1t 1s secured, whereby 3 18,778 s it two thicknesses of stra, are provided be- In testimon whereof I have aflixed my tween the connecting 1i and the first and Bi ature in t e presence of two witnesses, attaching eye, and three thicknesses of stra tins, third day of J une1914;
