Description

Bend, in the-county of 'HARVEY s. COVER, oFsoUrH BEND, INDIANA.
engine No. 0.991, weuprn 2a,
vTo au whom 'it may concern; j
\Be it known that I, lIARvErS. COVER, a citizen of the United States,.residing at South St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Eye Guards, of which the lbllowing is a full, clear, and exact specification. v
This` invention relates to new and useful improvements in eye guards or shields for firemen, metal -workers, chauffeurs, and otherswho are likely Vto be subjected to the action of fumes, gases, Wind, grit,` dust, etc.`
.The invention consists .in 'providing an eye-guard of a single vided with two lensolding ortions connected by the same member t at forms the cushioning part of the guard.
Another object resides inthe provision of integral or other reinforcing ribs or elements between the lens-holding members and the cushioning part of the guard to prevent the lens-holding portions springing back and partially obseuring the sight when a pull is exerted u on tliehead-gear.
A still urther object isfto obviate the use of cement or other fillings between the lenses and the lens-holding portions.
It is still further designed to eliminate the connection of the ears and a bridge-piece to the lens-holding portions roper, but, on the other hand, to provide or the connection of the ears and bridge-piece `connections at a distance somewhat remote from the connec-,
tion of the lenses'withthe lens-holding ortions and with respect to the lens-hol ing portions themselves. B reason of this peculiar disposition of tie ears and nosepiece with respect to the lens-holding portions bothv of the ears and nose-piece pei'-A- form not only their usual function, but also act as cushioning members. y
In the drawings, ljigure 1 is a face 'view of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a section taken through Fig. 1. i Referring more particularly tothe accontipanying drawings, the reference characters 1 and 2 indicate the lens-holdingA portions of my improved guard, each having an annular recess 3 near its outer end for the reception of the peripheral edges of the corresponding lenses 4. lliese lens-holding ortions eac taper rearwardl or downwar l decreasing in thickness to their aring edges,
regardless of-an distortions or wrinklin lpiece of material pro-v gradually Specication of Beisaued Letters Patent. Reissued June 16, 1908.

the iari such lexi ility as to assume proper positions edges 54 being designed to possess upon the wear to it'it'heorbits-ofthe eyes,
of the face, due to mes, gases, grit, wind; ust," etc. These, flaringportions' 5 terminate jacent the outer ends 'of thelens-holdin portions to provide the ears 5,'to,.whic atter may be secured the head-bandsffL by means of a suitable fastenin'y 7. Adjacent the inner op osite sides of t e lens-holding ortions 1v tiis flaring portionVV of the lensolding portions for-ms a connecting web portion 8 at the base of the lens-holding portions. lThis web ortion 8 forms the nosebridge and is provided in its ed e with a re- .cess 9, designed to it the nose o? From the description thus given it will be seen that the nose-piece 8 is formed at the base, or, in other Words, at the inner or rear parts of the lens-holding portions instead of directly across the lens-holding portions at their outer faces. In the present instance the nose-piece is of comparatively thin materiahpermitting of a doubling or folding of one lens-holding portion upon the other, so that the guard may and whereby the guard may be conveniently carried y m ones pocket. The graduallytapering portions of the lensholding memf bers, including the nose-bridge part, form the lcushion of the guard, the flaring parts extending beyond the peripheries of the lensholding parts, as shown. A
VThe character 10 indicates ribs formed integrally with the body of the iard and designed to prevent the lens-boiling portions from bending out of shape and partiallyobscuring the sight when a pull isexerted by the head-bands 46. These ribs prevent the greater head-bands upon the Haring or cushioned members bein transmitted -to the lens-holding portions, t us rendering unnecessary the use of means other than the flaring or cushioning parts to hold the lenses in their seats in the lens-holding members. It Will thus beunderstood that the use of cement, iillings, ctc.,between the lenses and lens-holding portions is obviated.
I claim: 1 )An eye -guard comprising a cushion member including integral, outwardly eX- tending annular walls forming a pair of lensholding portions, and integral reinforcingthe wearer.
part of the pul by the l require but little space ribs joining the walls of the lens-holding portions .and the cushion member.
2,'An eyeard composed of -a single iece of material and comprising a pair of ens-holding members whose Walls ta'per gradually and flare outwardl to form a cushion and a nose-piece for t e eye-guard,
and ribs formedinte ally with the walls of the lens-holding mem ers.
eye-guard com ris member having integral fenstions extending outwardly therefromand reinforcingribs on the lens-portions. l
4.' An eye -guard comprising an elastic cushion member having lntegral lens portions extending vfrom one side thereof, integral ribs on the walls of said lense portions -to reinforce the same, substantially as described. v
a cushion olding por- 5. An eye-guard consisting of two lenses, an elastic piece embodying two lens-holding portions, each consisting of a rino of elastic Amaterial, adapted to constrictiveltyr hold one lens, a flat flexible annular cushion ada ted .to bear upon the flesh of the'wearer a out the eye,-a thin compressible and'elastic tubu- -lar lian e connecting the ring and the cushion, an a ilexible bridge connecting the two at annular cushions whichfbear upon the esh of the' Wearer.
l In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
