' Original No. 767,949, dated August 13,1904. Application for reissue tiled .Tuly 10, 1905. Serial No. 269,135-
TQ @ZZ Loc/0m, it may con/ecru:
Be it known that I, HERBERT LUTZ, a citizen of the Dominion of anada, residing at ,24:5 Emerald street, in the city of Hamilton, in the 5 county of Wentworth, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Vehicle-Tires; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construcrO tion and operation'of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ve hicle-tires, and particularly in .those adapted for use with automobiles.
The object ci the invention is to construct I5 `a tire of this type which while possessing' the resilient qualities of the ordinary pneumatic tire will be less expensive of production and; of far greater durability than such tire and. Will possess the advantage of adaptability of ao being tightened or expanded to suit the load to'be carried, which cannot be accomplished witlrsolid-rubber tires. I- attain these objects by the constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a plan View, partly in section, of a vehicle wheel and tire embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a crosssection of the rim or tire; Fig. 3', a perspective View of one of the tightening` devices and 3o bolts which I employ with my tire. Fig. 4s is a top plan view of such tightening device and bolt, showing the same applied to the,``tight ening-strip; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sek-,tional detail of the rim and tire.
Similar letters referto similar par ts throughout the several views. 1
i In the drawings, A represents the felly or rim of a wooden wheel of any desired size and thickness; B, the spokes, which maybe of iron 4o or wood. C is the hub, which may be oi iron or wood.
D is a loose strip, preferably metal, about one-sixteenthoil an inch thick and the i'ull width of therim, placed around the feily. It
45 is providedzwitha series oi' wedgeshaped projections a onits outer side, which are used for tightening up the tire, as will be furtherdescribed hereinafter.
E E are two` strips of a materialfsuch as 50 leather, canvas, or like substances-made to encircle the rim over the strip D, and they are `corrugated, `so as to leave a series oi recesses between the strip D and the surrounding band F, said recesses being arrangedupper and ber cushions ci is the band F above referred to, said band being oi a material snch as leather made to cover the said cushions en- Cin the outside ci fi tirely around the wheel,y said band is placed another pair or strips G formed with a seriesof corrugations extendH ing between theband F and a covering l The inner recesses f provide air-spaces a .cent-the band F, and the larger recessesf' on the outer. side contain rubbercushions ,fj or cquivalentelastic material; The corrugated Astrips E G are fastened together rwith the band F by a series oi" groups of nails, rivets, or stitches it', extending thcrethrough.Y The casing H is of leather, canvas, or like material made to inclolse the parts hereinbei'orede- .scribed to exclude dust andl lilre substances from entering the tire. l n n I is a band or beit oi' ieather or rlilre material encircling the casing H as an outer tire to take off the wear and tear of the tire, and an extra outer tire J, of leather or like material, is placed on and over the said band or belt I, and the bands are secured together' with strips G by means oi nails, rivets, or stitching t'.
K K are metal bands bolted to the sides oi the felly or rim A, the bolts j' passing through both bands andthe felly. This holds the A leather or other covering matter L in a tirmf The said bolts j' are tightd, with the base or each of saidbloclzs gever-fv lapping the overhanging ends Zfof the inner blocks or cushions. Vif ith this construction and arrangement of bloclsor cushions it fois" lows that when the tire is being rolled along' the ground the ovcr'hanging endsg" oi' the The bases` roo los f outer blocks or cushions will yield as pressure y is brought to bear upon them. When presl body portion thereof and an outer series of sure is brought to bear upon the main body of such blocks or cushions, it is transmitted through the bands F to the ends d of the inner blocks or cushions rl, which overhang the bodies of the blocks or cushions in the same manner as do the ends g of the outer blocks of cushions. Owing to this construction, the
resilient qualities of a pneumatic tire are secured. y
The means for tighteningand loosening the tire may be described as follows: L is atightening device consisting of two plates ll, hav ing each a squarecentral opening for admitting a correspondingly-shaped bolt. Each of said plates Z is p rovided with two spaced projections o u. Said device is let into recesses in the face of the rim or telly, so that the pairs of projections o are made to enter corr responding openings in the metal strip l) t'o'r the purpose of expanding' and looseningr the tire when the square bolt-head l' is turned` as by a wrench. the inner ends ot' the blocks or cushions cl riding up or down the inclined surfaces of the wedges, according to the direction in which the strip D is turned. On the end of the bolt opposite'the head Z locking-nuts p p are provided.
In assembling, the central band F may be somewhat loosely fitted` so as to be capable of being tightened, if desired, by the strip D.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isV
