SPECIFICATION rmin partcf leeissued Letters Patent No.'12,182, dated n eeinber a, 19cc.
Original No. 643,948, dated February To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS mea a Vanwert, in the county of? Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use 'meuttoa mowing-machine designed to be sel cured to the rear of the finger-bar of any machine for the purpose of gathering the grass Or clover into bunches and discharging the bunches behind the truck of the mower, where it is out of the way of the team on the next I round; and in consists in the peculiar con structioni and arrangement of the devices which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawin%sl, in which- 1. t- 'gure 1 is a perspective view of a mower having my invention applied. Fig.2 is a perspective-view of'thebuncher and dropper, and Fig.3 is a detail.
Inthe drawings, Arepresents the fingerbar of any ordinary mower. To this is applied in rear of-the same a gathering and turning device for the grass, consisting of a plurality 'otflat steel bars a, connected together in front by a cross-bar b anddetachr go ably secured to the rear of the finger-bar by yokes c with suitable belts or set-screwe' The .fiat steel bars are shortest at the outer end of the finger-bar and longest near the inner end and terminate at their rear ends on a diagonal line, their rear ends being curved up, as shown at a, and turned laterally, s'o' that the planes 0! their turned up ends "are not at right angles to the line of draft, but occupy an inclined or diagonal position thereto, which 0 causes them to exert a turning action upon the grass after the principle of the moldboard of a plow. This causes the grass to be gathcred as it is cut and directed inwardly toward the drivers seat, when it is-held by a buucher and dropper. This latter consists of an arm (1, having my suitablenumber of teeth, tines, or prongs extending therefrom at right angles down toward the ground and arranged 6, 190d. ments, of which the following is a specifica v.
dated April 1, 1902. nipliation for present reissuewith their lower ends to drag'upon the ground beside the longest one of theflat metal strips, e so. as to act as a" gate to prevent the grass from being discharged'from the gatherer until su-ifidienthas accumulated to form a bunch for aw'indrow. When this occurs, the arm (1 is raised, as shown by dotted lines, and the grass is allowed to be discharged with a side delivery behind the truck -'wheels of the mower. The gate-arm (Z (see Fig. 2) isrigidly connected to or formed on a rock-shaft d journaled i'n bearings (1 near" the base of the drivers seat, and this rock -snaft. has a foottreadle (1 upon the opposite side of the rockshaft from the. gate-arm, by pressing upon which treadle with fits'lflnot the driver is able I at willto lift tire'gate-anduischargethe bunch *of grass. The tines or prongs d of the gate have their lower ends bent, as shown, to enable them to trail along on the ground without catching corners or to be backed, these tines or prongs are not rigidly attached to their carrying-arms. d, but are loosely swiveled thereon at the top, as shown in Fig, 3, so'that the said tines may; turn about their vertical axes as their lower 7% ends trail; on the ground when the machine is turning This' 'preventshhese teeth from catching. into obstrluctio'ns and permits the load of grass to be held on the gatherereven in turning at a turfiingsrow, so the bunch of 8.6 grass need not be dumped at the turning-row, where it would be in the .way of the fbetof the team.
The flat bars or slats a are thin, as shown in Fig. 1, an'dare'of a material which is resil'ent in this form. Theirupturned rear portions are turnedfso as to face somewhat toward the discharge side, andeachjndividualslat therefore gives an initial movement of'the grass ate in turning androlling the bunch toward the deli very side. This cooperation is facilirated by the resilience of the slats, which causes their upturned ends, it pushed backwardby the bunch, totendto springtorward again in a direction thatteride to'throw or roll and hanging. A side-delivery attachment for mowingmachines, comprising in its ,construction a plurality of thin; fiat, resilierft?slats gradually and uniformly incrcasingiin length from one side to'the other of the attachment and having their front portions in a substantially uniform plane to rest on the ground, and having their rear portions turned upwardly and turned in a direction to present their concave faces toward the longer or discharge side of the attachment.
2. The combination with a. mower having a side-delivery gatherer comprising a plurality of bars extendingrearwardly'from the finger.- bar and having upwardly-turned free ends, of agate sn bstantially parallel with the delivery side thereof to obstructthe discharge of material and movably supported to enable it to be moved away to bunch of grass.
permit the discharge of a 3. In a mower, the combination witha gatlierer arranged behind the cutter-bar and composed of parallel slats turned up at their rear ends on a diagonal-line; of a gate composed of an arm having pendent teeth or tines arranged along the line of draft substantially parallel with thedelivery'side of the gather-er to obstruct the discharge of materiahsaid arm being made adjustable to be lifted from the gather-er to discharge the bu nch of grass substantially as described.
4. The combination with a mower having a gatherer with a sided'eli'very; of a vertir cally-working gate having swiveling pendent prongs or teeth curved at their lower ends substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two snbscrilgin'gtw-itnesses,
THOMAS B. FAGAN.
