Description

UNITED u STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRIOK S. DEVLA. 'OF ELIZABETHPRT, NRW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT 1N .JounNALoxss Specilleation forming port of Letters Patent No. 30,128, dated September 25, 1860; Reissue No. 1,208, dated Joly o, Iscr. f
Division A.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that 1, IArnIcK S. DEvLxN, of Elizabethport, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented an I mprovement in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to e novel kind of bearing or box for ull sorts ofA journals or axles to run in, and has for its objects the production o boxes und bearings of all kinds irom iibrous metter, as n substitute for the "nrious metals, ulloys, und wood new employed, and' at an exceedingly reduced cost, and possessing great practical utility rnd ed- .vantage over all materials orweonipositions heretofore used for the said purpose.
Previous to my invention boxes for, the journals of car and other axles and bearings forall sorts ot' shafts in the various branchesv of machinery have been made of metal and alloys-such as brass, babbitt metal, &c.-dif ferent metals heilig selected for tliilerent boxes, according to the size of the journals to he runv in them, the material of Whichthe journal was to be, and the velocity at which it was to run, upon rules of` practicefwell lknown to the experienced mechanic. I have discovered that paper-pulp, o r any vegetable fibrous matter reduced to e pulp, when soliditled by pressure will form most excellent bearing-surface for boxes of ull sorts of journals and shafts; and my invention consists or '-forming the bearing-surfaces of journalboxes of :my vegeta-ble fibrous pulp compressed into a solid condition, as will be hereinafter fully explained..
To ena-ble those skilled in the art to make 'und use my inventiop, Il will describe the method in which I have l#successfully put the same into practice. i f
I t-a'ke the pulp, prepared in the usual way yfor making paper, ortake old paper and reduce it to e pulp7 or make a pulp oi any vegetable fibrous materialfby any suitable process -of pulping'. From this pulp I extract' so much of the `water' as to leaveit ysufficiently moist only to be plastic. Ithen fill this moist pulp into the box of which it is to form the bearing-surface leaving a given quantity projecting over on above the quantity required to ll. the space `to be occupied by the pulp,
and in this condition place the box with its method just described of forming the bearings 4will be perfectly comprehended by reference j tothe accompanying drawings, forming partof this speeicution.
At Figure 1 is shown a. box or shell suoli as uscdon a car-axle. At Fig. 2 the said box is shown filled with a chargent' the pulp which has been dried and is ready for the press. Fig. 3 is 'a perspective view of a form er, which must be of exactly the samedameter as the journal which is to run in the box. Fig.4 is a sectional view of box and its charge of bearing composition or material, with former A'in position to be-pressed. In this condition the whole is submitted to o. heavy pressure, and the former is forced into posi tion seen at Fig. 5, wherebythe whole mass of bearing materiely is compressed into the box orsh'ell and its bearing-surface perfectly shaped or molded to t the journal which is to run in it.
In preparing a box of the size yshown in the the accompanyingdrnwings, I should putin a. suiicient quantity of the moist pulp to projectover or above its intended limits about threequarters of lun inch, (I have not observed any, l shrinkagein drying,) and apply a pressurg'sjv severe enough to force or pack the whole quantity within the box, as shown 'et Fig. 5. The degree of compactness of the material or amount of pressure to which it is submitted in filling the boxes does not, however, 'consti-A tute any portion of my invention, and maybe i' varied as circumstances and experience muy suggest or require. I have' found by a. practical and thorough test of my invention thatl n. box orbearing made of paper-pulp, as hereinbefore described, will cause less friction on the journal running in it than-a, bearing-'surface of i enymetal or material heretofore einployed; that it will be less liable to l1oet, a,nd
-willl last longer than any ofthe materials now iltive axles, but this forms no,` part of my iuventiim.
What I claim as my inventionrand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of paper-pulp or liulp made of any vegetable fibrous material to form the beeriugsurface of.jcarnal-boxes,substantially as hereibefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of March, 1861.v
