T aM whmn t may concern,.-
Ilo it known that I, JOHN Af BARRETT, a citi-v zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,
have invented certain new and usei'ulA Im- -provements in Wire-'lwisting Machines g. and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full,
` clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appcrtains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to the construction and operation of twisting-machines, bein g especially intended for use in twisting together two insulated electrical conductors, but being also equally applicable to a general purpose of twisting wires, rods, or other analogous structures.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, substantially as 2o hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a lon gitudinal vertical section ofthe apparatus. Fig. 2 isan end view looking at the device from the pulley end. Fig. Ellis a plan view of the interior reel-frame, and Fig. 4 is a side view showing both reels in operative relation.
ly my inventionl aim to avoid torsional ef- .fect on the individual wires andto cause the 3o twisting to take plaeewithout bodily movement of either-or any of the reels, requiring therefore but a very light structure for rotation, and as the weight of. this structure will be at all times the same irrespective oi the amount oil wire onthe .reels it can be most aci'niraiclyjlalaneed and given any speed desirable. l
More partioularly myinvention is carried into eileet in the following manner: Upon suitable stainllards 1 and 2, attached to a base 3, 4I journal the tubular shafts 1 and '5 exactly in line with each other, and join these by thc flier-frame 6. The inner ends ofthe tubular shafts 1 and 5 are constituted the bearings of a reel-frame 7, having at one end the solid journal. 8 and at the other lend thc tubular jonrnaltl, provided with the flaring mou th l0 for the easy introduction of the wire from a statimiary reel 11:, which is .mounted on the trans\ers shaft 12, carried by the frame 7,
v and replacing a full one.
the shaft being withdrawn when necessary for the purpose of removing the empty reel The recl-fr'alneis provided with heavy weights 13 for the purpose of increasing its inertia and preventing it from rotating when the iiier-i'rame-A 6 is in rapid revolution. Evidently, since the frame- 6 is of larger diameter than the space occupied by ther reelsframe 7, the frame 6 can be rotated around the reelll, and the weights `6o will keep the lattcrstation ary again st the frietion developed at the journals 8 and i), which should Abe arranged to be as slight as possible.
On thetubular shafts 4 and 5 I clamp the elbow-'sleeves 11 15, which vhave a passage 1G 65 and a socket 17, into the latter of which' are@ inserted thc ends of the tube 18, which 4sweeps around the out-side of the frame G and is I' clamped thereto. A n opening in the side of the tubular shat ts 4. and 5 is arranged to curve 7o smoothly into the passages 1G, so that by the construction sho`wn a smooth opening or passage exist-s laterally from theI tubular shaft l around theo'uts'ide of the frame (i, through the tube 18, and into the distant tubular shaft 5, making a loop which in its revolution incloses the internal reel 1.1. To bal- .ance the extra weight thus placed on the one sido of frame I apply the counter-weight 19 to the other side of the-said frame. The -el- Sc bow 15 is provided with a driving-pulley 20, as shown, and on applying a belt or other power-transmitting device to thesaid pulley the structure comprised by the tubular shafts 1 and 5, elbow 11, frame 6, tube 1S, and el- 85 bow 15 is whirled around on the axes of the two shafts 4 and 5y and can be moved at an exceedingly high velocit-y without'danger of breaking.-I At the same time the reel 11 will be maintained stationary. r I 9 vThe reel@` 1 is filled with wire, the end of which is passed out through the tubularjournal 9 and zon through the tubularshaft 5.
Another reel adjacent tothe end of tubular shaft 4, set'in suitable housings, is filled with 95 wire, and the end of'this wire is passed into the tubular shaft and/around the lateral passage-way or loop aiiorded bythe tube 1S andinto'the tubular shaft' 5, and the ends of tho-tu-'owires thus passing from the tubular roo ,shaft 5 are fastened'to a`windingreel or other device, to'which power is. applied for the'pu-r- `pose of Winding up the wire as itis twisted.
It is evident that the wire passing through '-5 the loop may be.. whirled an indefinite number of Vtimes withofut becoming twisted on its gown axis, and this rotation may b e -eected without disturbing the position 0f the reel'll.' If now tliewhirling-frame 6 be set in rapid .'x'jo revolution and suitable tension be applied to the respective reels, the wire carried bythe lateral tubular passage will be twisted around the WireA passing from"reel 11, and by suit.
ably adjusting, the tension of the reel 11 and '5f-5 the external reel feeding the other wire the.-
nature: of the twist can beimade to corre-- spend with' any requirement-@that is, either Wire may lie-given a greater' twist than the vother-or one wire` may'havetheother one, go* 'wound around it in the form of a spiral vof any V desired pitch, and in all cases'there will be no torsionproduced oneither wire with reference to its 'ownaxi'sl Anymeansmay` -be adoptedr :for placing tension on thesupply-reels.
`Forinstance, the frame 7 may be provided 1th a suitable'bearin g for the lever b, which carries-a brai-shoe B5adapted to bear against the rim-ofrre S11, and the friction is adjusted bypieans of the screw c, 'whiclrpresses against ggtlie frame" 7 te the required degree. lThe exldzernal reel 21 may 'be' arranged in a similar manner-,vas-l'shownin Fig'.- 4: It is journaled in standards 22, one or both of which carry a pivoted lever vb, having brake #shoe B and adjusting-screw c. .When thee'xternal reel is thus providedwith an adjustable tension devi :e,l the latter can be varied at any moi ment, s o that the relative tension of the two strands can always be arranged to snit any 4o reqnireme'ntv of relative' twistvand without stopping the j machine. lThe 'resultwf this construction, owing 'to' the lightness and balanced condition of the iiying frame, is thatI twist 'or manipulate the wiresat an enor- 2. In atwisting-niachine for wire, cord', dpe.,
v tubular spindle 9 bearing in the tubular jour- -nal 5 of the rotating frame;
mously-inereased rate over anything possible 45 in themachines et former constructions, and consequently a given amount of twisted wire can be turned out with a single lmachine where ordinarily from tenA to twenty twistingniachineswould berequired to produce the same 5o amount in a "given time.
Qbviously, since the tension can be so adj usted as to cause one wire to be, so 4to say, wound spirally on the other, the device maybe applied to wire-covering machines, in which 55 oase the Wirewould b 'e fed from the reel 11, and ,the covering or Windir g thread would be .passed through the whirling frame and tube.
l'It is evident'that the use of my invention is not confined to the twisting of metallic Wires 6o together, 'as it 'is equally applicable in' the twisting of strandsof any nature or for any purpose.
I claim as rnyinventionv1. Inatwisting-machine for wire,'cord, &c., 65
the combination of the journaled rotating .frame 6 havin gf the tubular j ournals' at, 14 and 5,15, the guide-tube 18 connecting therewith vand the counterbalance' 10, with means for rotating said frame. 7o
