To all whom it mil im erm- Be it'kuown that 1, WAL'BEB lL'tnswn r,
a resident of-( incinnati, in the county of Hamiiton and State of Ohio, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements inCash Registers and Indicators, of; -whichthc following is aspeciflcation.
My inyention .relates particularly to improvements indeviees foixuctuating the'rcgisv tering mechanism; to imprbvemcnts in the registering mechanism itself; in devices for automatically locking the mechanism and preventin its operation whil's the drawer is open; u devices for facilitutiu' andv simplifying computations of the received and registered; in. devices for supporting the. indicatingtabie'ts with greater csrtainty,.a nd generally in devices by which greater simplicity of'constrnct-ion and ease of operation are atso tain'ed. p

Fig. 2 isaplan view;.Fig. 3 s perspective side view of a pairof istering-wheels, cut away to show serrated e ges and the palss-let by which they are operated. Fig. 4 is a perspective viewof the wing and wing-arm, showin individual springs. Fig. .5 is .a sectloual v on -showing short arms and five-cent bar, and Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view show- 0 ing the locking device and springcatch. Fig. 7 is a vertical section in the rear oithe flvecent-bar. Fifi 8 is a detail of the wing-arm; and Fig. 9, a eta il showing a portion of the wing. individuallsprings, and the wing-arm. Ais a case j videdwith suitable'irameyork for supporting the mechanism.
Bis s pivot-bar cxtendiug.i'rom side to side of the. case, on which are balanced long lever arms or keys-C, and shorter lever arms or 40 keys 0', in such manner that the front ends of the lever-arms extend through the front of the use and 'are lighterthnn the inner ends, thus keeping he'lre s in their normal position on til buttons, wit which their projecting ends g5 sreproviticd, are pressed down. The ion r heysare provided with buttons, indicating ve and theeven multiples thereof, and the shorter keys with but-tons indicating the odd multiles oi flve beyond the first power. The arms extend to the rear of the machine and have their inner ends flattened to support rods D,
te'r-'wheels, as follows: \Vhen the button is deat the top of which are indicating-tablets These indicating-tablets are pushed up into a chamber having afront of glass, through which the tablets maybe seen, after the usual mannor in such contrivances, the case being so arranged as to conceal when shut and locked all of the actuating and registering mechanism.
On the longer keys, 0, between the pivotbar and the supporting-rods, are pivoted pal- 6o lets F. These pallets have each two teeth, f and f the i'orme'rbeingsomewhat longerthan the latter, anll.ure preferably of the shape shown; in Fig. 3, having ashoulder, j',which is arranged to come in contact with a disengaging-bar, G, when raised to a certain height.
" iairs'of registering ratchet-wheels, H-H,
are mounted side by side on a shaft, 1, above the keys. one wheel to register each payment, the other to register the. revolutions of the first. As the former is moved a greater (listanee at each pallet-actuation than the latter. the number of notches or serrations on the second wheel will be considerably more than'that of those on the first.
- The number of-lever arms or keys is-fixed by convenience and with reference to the work to which thecontrivunceistobeput. Twenty are represented in the drawings. the buttons thereon indicating every multiple of five up to one hundred. Every key, except those which indicate odd multiples of five, has its own pallet and operates its own pair of regispresseG- -for instance, the twenty cent but- 8 ton-the pallet which its key bears engages its longer tooth in a serration and pushes the ratchet-wheel forward until the shoulder onthe pallet reaches the disengaging-bar. This diseigrugingbar is swung onnrms pivoted to the do of the frame back of the pallet, and when in its normal position will be above the plane of the pivotal points: As the shoulder of any pallet engages with it, it israiscd, moving the pallet througlran arc of a circle having the supporting arms asradii, and thus disengaging it from the whet-l. Fast to these cogwheels are plainsvheels H, on which are numbers 0 1 2 3 4. &c., up to the total number of cogs, so that if the re inter-wheels be set at 0 the tlrst depression 0 the twenty-cent button moves the ratchet wheel through one space and shows on the reading-surface the number '1. The next depression of the button shows; the number 2 as the reading ofthe register-- wheel, and so on till it has made a. complete 5 revolution, when the longer tooth enters thev gether, the number Oappeariug on the former, In this way,
and the number'l on the latter. 11 1f there are forty notches or serrations on the former and sixty on the latter, twenty -four hundred twenty-cent cash payments will be I 5 registered by one rev'olut ion of t helatternvheel, this wheel registering'the-number of revolutions the flrstwheel has made.
Any suitable device for, checking the movement of the register wheel, when the actu- :o-atln -pallet isldiseiigngemmay he'employed as a rake-for instance; asshown in the drawi 's :series'ofcurved-flat springs, h; A spring, is set on each longhey'to press upon the let, insuring each-tooth or teeth :5 outsringts proper notch 'until the shoulder reaches thediaengagiug-bar.
The shorter keys, which. indicate the'odd Iflnulti les of five-fifteen, twenty-five, thirty- '99 and comin under a ilve-cent'bar, J, asshown must clear yin Fig. 5. This five-cent bar is .ilrmly attached to thefive-eent key and passes at rightangles above all the keys, and is supported at the other end by an arm, through 5 which the shaft B passes. These shorterkeys ,hs've also attached to each of them lugs J, projoetiogslightly to one side over the nearest lon key, or under the key if the lugs are placedck of the shaft.
'It will be seen that when the button attachedto any short key is depressed-for in- M8110. the twenty-five-cent button-it operates e dive-cent key by means of the fivemother, and also the twenty-cent key by means of the projecting lug J, thus moving ths'twenty-eent and five-cent register-wheels each forward one notch and throwing up into sight the twenty-cent and five-cent tablets, in
they usual manner. As the keys are very nearly balanced on the pivot-bar,'(having merely suflicient excess of weight in the rear to keep them iu'the position shown iuFig. 1
when not pressed down,) nearly the whole,

dsaressedby'the-keys, and returns the mechsu m to its sonnet, positlonafter the key whieh-has-been depressed is released.
' Itvgill readily be seen that no ap rcciably s'gnatergower is needed to depress t e 15, 25,

over the old method.
- I prefer the use of the kind offive-cent bar shown in the drnwi ngs, though other c0nstruc-' tions are evidently possible. For instance, .75 the five-cent bar may be slotted, allowing the longer-keys to pass through the cut;away portions, while the shorter keys (in this, (also straight and not bent up at the end) would come under the depending portions, and than actuate the five-cent arm, as in the preferred construction. a
