Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Lobelia plant named ‘Balwatarlu’, characterized by its dark violet-blue colored flowers having a white eye, medium green colored foliage, and vigorous, mounded, semi-trailing growth habit, is disclosed.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Lobelia erinus.
Variety denomination: ‘Balwatarlu’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Lobelia plant botanically known as Lobelia erinus and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Balwatarlu’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Guadalupe, California during October 2017. The objective of the breeding program was the development of heat tolerant Lobelia cultivars having a long flowering season with a vigorous, mounded, semi-trailing growth habit suitable for baskets.
The new Lobelia cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is TECHNO Heat Upright Blue ‘LOBZ0011’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,868, characterized by its large, medium blue-colored flowers having a white eye, medium green-colored foliage, and vigorous, upright growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is TECHNO Heat Dark Blue ‘Tech Hepdab’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 21,049, characterized by its deep blue-colored flowers having a white eye, dark green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, mounded growth habit. The new cultivar was selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during April 2018 in a controlled environment in Guadalupe, California.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since April 2018 in Guadalupe, California and West Chicago, Illinois has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘Balwatarlu’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Lobelia plant:
-
- 1. Dark violet-blue colored flowers having a white eye;
- 2. Medium green colored foliage; and
- 3. Vigorous, mounded, semi-trailing growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in having darker violet-blue colored flowers and a more trailing growth habit. Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the male parent primarily in having increased growth vigor and a more trailing growth habit.
Of the many commercially available Lobelia cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is Waterfall Blue ‘Balobwablu’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,524. However, in side-by-side comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Balobwablu’ in at least the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have slightly lighter violet-blue colored flowers than plants of ‘Balobwablu’; and
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have a larger calyx than plants of ‘Balobwablu’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘Balwatarlu’. The plants were approximately 13-weeks old. The plants were grown in 4.5-inch containers for approximately 9 weeks in a greenhouse in West Chicago, Illinois. Plants were given two pinches, one at transplant and one three weeks after transplant.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in January 2023 under natural light conditions in Naperville, Illinois.
The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately 13-week-old plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a polycarbonate greenhouse under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in West Chicago, Illinois in 4.5-inch containers for approximately 9 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium. Plants were given two pinches, one at transplant and one three weeks after transplant. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 68° F. to 70° F. (20° C. to 21° C.) during the day and approximately 60° F. to 65° F. (16° C. to 18° C.) during the night. Supplemental lighting was used. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
