Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Perovskia plant named ‘Doperjel’, characterized by its relatively compact, upright to outwardly spreading plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; freely branching growth habit; freely flowering habit; small violet-colored bilabiate flowers arranged in verticillasters on long terminal spikes; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Perovskia atriplicifolia.
Cultivar denomination: ‘DOPERJEL’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct Perovskia plant, botanically known as Perovskia atriplicifolia, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Doperjel’.
The new Perovskia plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program was to develop new unique Perovskia plants with attractive plant form and flower coloration.
The new Perovskia plant originated from an open-pollination in April, 2016 of a proprietary selection of Perovskia atriplicifolia identified as code number PV16-000022-002, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with an unknown selection of Perovskia atriplicifolia as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Perovskia plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated open-pollination in a controlled environment in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands in July, 2017.
Asexual reproduction of the new Perovskia plant by terminal cuttings in a controlled greenhouse environment in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands since August, 2017 has shown that the unique features of this new Perovskia plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the new Perovskia have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of the new Perovskia plant. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Doperjel’ as a new and distinct Perovskia plant:

- 1. Relatively compact, upright to outwardly spreading plant habit.
- 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
- 3. Freely branching growth habit.
- 4. Freely flowering habit.
- 5. Small violet-colored bilabiate flowers arranged in verticillasters on long terminal spikes.
- 6. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Perovskia differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in plant habit as plants of the new Perovskia are shorter and more compact than plants of the female parent selection.
Plants of the new Perovskia can be compared to plants of the Perovskia hybrida ‘Little Spire’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,643. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Perovskia differ primarily from plants of ‘Little Spire’ in plant size as plants of the new Perovskia are shorter and more compact than plants of ‘Little Spire’. In addition, plants of the new Perovskia are more freely branching than plants of ‘Little Spire’.
The accompanying photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Perovskia plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical desription which accurately describe the colors of the new Perovskia plant.
The photograph on the first sheet (FIG. 1 ) is a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Doperjel’ grown in a container.
The photograph on the second sheet (FIG. 2 ) are close-up views of typical leaves and flowers of ‘Doperjel’.
The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown in 13-cm containers in Straelen, Germany during the early summer in an outdoor nursery and under conditions and cultural practices which approximate those generally used in commercial Perovskia plant production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 21° C. and night temperatures averaged 15° C. Plants were pinched two weeks after planting rooted young plants and were 18 weeks old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, Fifth Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
