Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant named ‘SMNHSME’ is disclosed, characterized by large, mophead inflorescences, colored pastel pink to blue based on soil pH. Plants are very floriferous, have rounded dwarf habits and are densely branched. The new variety is a Hydrangea, typically produced as an outdoor ornamental plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Hydrangea sp.
Variety denomination: ‘SMNHSME’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, at a commercial nursery in Grand Haven, Mich. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new, more floriferous Hydrangea varieties with better colors and habits. The crossing resulting in the new variety was made during the Summer of 2016.
The seed parent is the variety Hydrangea serrata, ‘MAK20’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 24,820. The pollen parent is the variety Hydrangea macrophylla, ‘SMNHMSIGMA’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,929.
The new variety was found and selected by the inventor in the Summer of 2017 at the same nursery in Grand Haven, Mich.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘SMNHSME’ was first performed during the Summer of 2017 in Grand Haven, Mich., by softwood cuttings. Through subsequent propagation, multiple additional generations have been reproduced, having shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
The cultivar ‘SMNHSME’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMNHSME.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMNHSME’ as a new and distinct Hydrangea cultivar:
-
- 1. Large mophead inflorescences.
- 2. Very floriferous, with inflorescences on nearly every lateral branch.
- 3. Remontant.
- 4. Dwarf size.
- 5. Densely branching, rounded/mounded habit.
- 6. Pastel pink and blue flower color, based on soil pH and presence/absence of aluminum.
Plants of ‘SMNHSME’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHSME’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Inflorescences of ‘SMNHSME’ mophead, while inflorescences of the seed parent are lace-cap.
- 2. ‘SMNHSME’ has a lighter flower color, while the seed parent has a more vibrant flower color.
Plants of ‘SMNHSME’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHSME’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Plants of ‘SMNHSME’ have larger mophead inflorescences than the pollen parent.
- 2. ‘SMNHSME’ has lighter pink flowers in soil without bluing agent, while the pollen parent's flowers have a richer pink color in soil without bluing agent.
- 3. ‘SMNHSME’ has lighter blue flowers in soil with bluing agent than the pollen parent.
- 4. ‘SMNHSME’ produces more blooms than the pollen parent.
Plants of the new cultivar Hydrangea ‘SMNHSME’ can be compared to the commercial variety Hydrangea ‘SMNHSC’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 33,206. Plants of ‘SMNHSME’ are similar to plants of ‘SMNHSC’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHSME’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. ‘SMNHSME’ has light blue flower color in acidic soil with bluing agent, while ‘SMNHSC’ has lavender flower color in acidic soil with bluing agent.
- 2. ‘SMNHSME’ has soft pink flower color in basic soil without bluing agent, while ‘SMNHSC’ has hot pink flower color in basic soil without bluing agent.
‘SMNHSME’ is illustrated by the accompanying photographs which show the plant's form, foliage, and inflorescences. The colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new hybrid Hydrangea. Age of the plants photographed is between 2 to 3 years.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SMNHSME’ plants grown outdoors in Grand Haven, Mich. The plants were about 2 to 3 years old. Temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 10° C. at night to 18° C. to 27° C. during the day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments were given to the plants. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
