Abstract

A new and distinct variety of Leucothoe plant named ‘BLULE1801’ which is characterized by the combination of a compact growth habit, juvenile foliage that is suffused with a red coloration, dark green mature foliage which becomes progressively suffused with a deep maroon in cool weather, and the stability of all characteristics from generation to generation.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: The Latin name of the genus and species of the novel variety disclosed herein is Leucothoe fontanesiana.
Variety denomination: The inventive variety of Leucothoe disclosed herein has been given the variety denomination ‘BLULE1801’.
CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application claims priority to the Community Plant Variety Rights application number 2018/2345 filed Sep. 11, 2018, which is herein incorporated by reference.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Parentage: ‘BLULE1801’ is a seedling selection which resulted from the open pollination of a plurality of cultivated unnamed Leucothoe fontanesiana plants (not patented) in the year 1980. All plants, and therefore all potential parents of the instant plant, shared the exemplary phenotype of the species. In 1985, the inventor discovered a seedling from the cross of 1980 at his commercial plant nursery in Tapanui, New Zealand. The seedling was noted for its compact habit and unique foliage characteristics and was subsequently isolated for further evaluation in order to confirm the distinctness and stability of the characteristics first observed. After further evaluation it was determined that the unique characteristics of the candidate plant would prove favorable for commercial marketability. The new variety was given the breeder denomination ‘BLULE1801’.
Asexual Reproduction: Asexual reproduction of ‘BLULE1801’, by way of stem cuttings, was first initiated in or around the year 2000 at the inventor's commercial greenhouse in Tapanui, New Zealand. Through ten subsequent generations, the unique features of this cultivar have proven to be stable and true to type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘BLULE1801’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions and the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘BLULE1801’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘BLULE1801’ as a new and distinct Leucothoe cultivar:
    • 1. Leucothoe ‘BLULE1801’ exhibits a compact, flattened globular growth habit; and
    • 2. Leucothoe ‘BLULE1801’ exhibits newly emerged foliage which is suffused with a red coloration; and
    • 3. Leucothoe ‘BLULE1801’ exhibits green mature foliage which becomes progressively suffused with a deep maroon coloration as temperature decreases in autumn and winter.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
FIG. 1 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, an exemplary plant of ‘BLULE1801’ grown in a grown in a commercial greenhouse in Tapanui, New Zealand. This plant is approximately 21 months old, shown planted in a 21 cm container.
FIG. 2 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, the typical coloration of the mature foliage of ‘BLULE1801’, grown in a commercial greenhouse in Tapanui, New Zealand.
FIG. 3 illustrates, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color photographs of this type, the typical autumn coloration of the juvenile and mature foliage of ‘BLULE1801’.
BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following observations and measurements were made in September of 2018 and describe a sample set of six 21 month-old ‘BLULE1801’ plants grown in 21 cm nursery pots at a plant nursery in Tapanui, New Zealand. Plants were produced outdoors, in full sun, using conventional production protocols for Leucothoe which consisted of drip irrigation and no fertilizer applications. No pest or disease control measures were utilized in production.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that certain characteristics will vary with older or, conversely, with younger plants. ‘BLULE1801’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. Where dimensions, sizes, colors and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such characteristics are approximations or averages set forth as accurately as practicable. The phenotype of the variety may differ from the descriptions set forth herein with variations in environmental, climactic and cultural conditions. Color notations are based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, The Royal Horticultural Society, London, 2015 (sixth edition).
A botanical description of ‘BLULE1801’ and comparisons with the parent plants and most similar commercial variety of Leucothoe are provided below.
