Abstract

A new and distinct Abelia cultivar named ‘LITTLE LADY’ is disclosed, characterized by a very compact plant form, and dark pink, flower-like sepals which have ornamental value. The new variety is an Abelia, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Abelia grandiflora.
Variety denomination: ‘LITTLE LADY’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new Abelia cultivar is a product of a chance discovery by the inventor in Kevelaer, Germany. The new variety was discovered as a naturally occurring single branch mutation in nursery during August of 2015.
The parent is Abelia grandiflora ‘Prostrata’, unpatented.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘LITTLE LADY’ was first performed in September of 2015 at a nursery in Kevelaer, Germany. Vegetative soft wood cuttings were used. Subsequently, 3 generations have been reproduced and shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘LITTLE LADY’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘LITTLE LADY’, These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘LITTLE LADY’ as a new and distinct Abelia cultivar:
1. Dark pink, flower-like ornamental sepals.
2. Good container plant.
3. Very compact growth.
PARENT COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LITTLE LADY’ are similar to plants of the parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘LITTLE LADY’ differ in the following;
1. Foliage of the new variety is wider and more rounded than foliage of the parent variety.
2. Plants of the new variety are more floriferous than plants of the parent variety.
3. Plants of the new variety produce smaller flowers than plants of the parent variety.
4. Plants of the new variety are snore compact, with shorter branches than the parent.
6. Sepal color of the new variety is green and red with white, sepal color of the seed parent is darker, brown-red.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LITTLE LADY’ can be compared to the variety Abelia ‘Keiser’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 21,632. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics however, ‘LITTLE LADY’ differs in the following:
1. The new cultivar has lighter, glossier leaves; comparator has darker green leaves.
2. The new variety is more compact than this comparator.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
The accompanying photograph illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘LITTLE LADY’ grown in 1-gallon container, at approximately 1 year old. The plant was grown in a poly-house in Grand Haven, Mich. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, 6th edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘LITTLE LADY’ plants grown in a poly-greenhouse in Grand Haven, Mich. Measurements were taken during August 2018. The plants were about 1 year old in 1-gallon containers. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and 5° C. to 10° C. at night. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

      • Time to initiate roots.—1 to 2 months at approximately 18 to 27° C.
      • Root description.—Fibrous and fleshy. Thin with moderate density. Freely branching. White to tan in color, not effectively measured with a color chart.
      • Time to produce a rooted young plant.—About 40 days at approximately 18 to 27° C.
