Abstract
A new and distinct hybrid tea Rosa cultivar named ‘LIMking’ is disclosed, characterized by large soft yellow flowers with a strong, sweet fragrance. Flowers are around 10 cm in diameter and drop petals cleaning after bloom is finished. Plants are upright, and exhibit good resistance to blackspot diseases. The new variety is a Rosa, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Rosa hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘LIMking’.
The new Rosa cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Peter Lim. The objective of the breeding program was to produce vigorous new garden hybrid tea rose varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The cross resulting in this new variety was made during May of 2009.
The seed parent is the variety Rosa ‘BAIlord’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 19,046. The pollen parent is the variety Rosa ‘The Finest’, unpatented. The new variety was selected in 2010 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2009 crossing, in a nursery in McMinville, Oreg.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in in McMinville, Oreg. in June 2010 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The cultivar ‘LIMking’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘LIMking’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘LIMking’ as a new and distinct Rosa cultivar:
-
- 1. Vigorous hybrid tea rose plant
- 2. Large yellow flowers to about 10 cm in diameter
- 3. Strong resistance to black spot disease.
- 4. Petals drop off cleaning after bloom is finished.
- 5. Sweet fragrance
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ differ in the following:
- 1. The new variety is a tea rose, the seed parent is a shrub rose.
- 2. The new variety has larger and fewer petals than the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ differs in the following;
- 1. The new variety has a yellow flower, the pollen parent has a white flower.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ can be compared to the commercial variety Rosa ‘Jactou’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,706. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however ‘LIMking’ differs in the following:
- 1. ‘LIMking’ has a sweet fragrance, ‘Jactou’ has a musky fragrance.
- 2. ‘Jactou’ has darker yellow petals.
- 3. The new variety has an earlier blooming flower cycle than ‘Jactou’.
- 4. The new variety is less susceptible to black spot and mildew than ‘Jactou’.
- 5. The new variety is shorter than ‘Jactou’.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘LIMking’ can also be compared to the variety Rosa ‘Summer Love’, unpatented. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however ‘LIMking’ differs in the following:
- 1. ‘LIMking’ has a sweet fragrance, ‘Summer Love’ has no fragrance.
- 3. When the flowers are fully open, ‘Summer Love’ has a larger flower diameter.
- 4. Foliage of ‘Summer Love’ is a different shade of green.
The accompanying photograph illustrates in full color a close up of an individual flower. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘LIMking’ plants grown outdoors, in Palm Desert, Calif. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 10° C. to 38° C. during the day and from approximately 5° C. to 22° C. during the night. Measurements were taken in September. General light conditions were very bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
