ROSE PLANT Filed March 10, 1970 United States Patent 3,118 ROSE PLANT Eugene S. Boerner, deceased, late of Benton, N.Y., by Lincoln Rochester Trust (30., Rochester, N.Y., and Roger L. Boerner, Milwaukee, Wis., executors, assignors to Jackson & Perkins Company, Newport Beach, Calif.
Filed Mar. 10, 1970, Ser. No. 18,356
Int. Cl. A01h /00 U.S. Cl. BIL-22 1 Claim The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of rose plant of the fioribunda class, which was originated by the late Eugene S. Boerner, deceased, by crossing an unnamed and unpatented seedling of the rose variety known as Lydia (unpatented) with the rose variety known as Starbright (Plant Patent No. 2,128), the former being the seed parent and the latter being the pollen parent.
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new floribunda rose variety which bears multi-colored flowers on a bushy but compact plant. This objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics which are outstanding in the new variety and which distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other rose varieties:
(1) A vigorous, well-branched and compact habit of growth of the fioribunda type;
(2) A free-blooming habit throughout the season;
(3) Medium size flowers which are borne in small clusters and on lateral branches usually singly to a stem; and
(4) A distinctive, attractive and unusual flower color of Chinese Yellow which ages to Spinel Red on the outer edges of the petals at first, but later progressing to the center of the flower as the flower ages.
Asexual reproduction of the new variety by budding, as performed at Wasco, Calif., shows that the aforementioned characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompaying drawing shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of the new variety in different stages of development and as depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of the new variety, with the color terminology in accordance with Wilsons Horticultural Colour Chart, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are obvious:
