Abstract
A new and distinct Lycium plant named ‘SMNLBBB’, characterized by its upright to outwardly arching plant habit; freely branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit; yellow green-colored leaves; purple violet-colored flowers; large, numerous and attractive orange red-colored fruits; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Lycium barbarum.
Cultivar denomination: ‘SMNLBBB’.
The present Invention relates to a new and distinct Lycium plant, botanically known as Lycium barbarum and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘SMNLBBB’.
The new Lycium plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Grand Haven, Mich. The objective of the breeding program was to develop new large Lycium plants that produce large, numerous and attractive fruits.
The new Lycium plant originated from an open-pollination during the summer of 2012 of Lycium barbarum ‘SMNDBL’, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with an unknown selection of Lycium barbarum, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Lycium plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor in 2015 as a single plant within the progeny of the stated open-pollination in a controlled environment in Grand Haven, Mich.
Asexual reproduction of the new Lycium plant by softwood cuttings in Grand Haven, Mich. since 2015 has shown that the unique features of the new Lycium plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
Plants of the new Lycium have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMNLBBB’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMNLBBB’ as a new and distinct Lycium plant:

- 1. Upright to outwardly arching plant habit.
- 2. Freely branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit.
- 3. Yellow green-colored leaves.
- 4. Purple violet-colored flowers.
- 5. Large, numerous and attractive orange red-colored fruits.
- 6. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Lycium differ primarily from plants of the female parent, ‘SMNDBL’, in fruit production as plants of the new Lycium produce more fruits per plant than plants of ‘SMNDBL’. In addition, fruits of plants of the new Lycium are larger than fruits of plants of ‘SMNDBL’.
Plants of the new Lycium can be compared to the plants of Lycium barbarum ‘SMNDSL’ not patented. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Lycium differ from plants of ‘SMNDSL’ in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Lycium have lighter purple violet-colored flowers than plants of ‘SMNDSL’.
- 2. Plants of the new Lycium produce more fruits per plant than plants of ‘SMNDSL’.
- 3. Fruits of plants of the new Lycium are larger than fruits of plants of ‘SMNDSL’.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Lycium plant. The photographs show the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Lycium plant.

The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown during the summer in three-gallon containers in a polyethylene-covered greenhouse in Grand Haven, Mich. and under cultural practices typical of commercial Lycium production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 18° C. to 27° C. and night temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 10° C. Plants were three years old when the photographs and detailed description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
