Abstract
A new and distinct variety of Echeveria plant named ‘OVPEARLS04’ which is characterized by a compact globular plant form with an abundance of foliage which is tightly held in a basal rosette, flabellate foliage with a heavily undulated praemorse apex, and heavily pruinose foliage which gives the foliage a purple hue. The new variety has shown to be uniform and stable in the resulting generations from asexual propagation.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: The Latin name of the genus and species of the novel variety disclosed herein is Echeveria shaviana.
Variety denomination: The inventive variety of Echeveria disclosed herein has been given the variety denomination ‘OVPEARLS04’.
This application claims priority to the Community Plant Variety Rights application number 2017/2562, filed on Oct. 12, 2017, which is herein incorporated by reference.
Parentage: ‘OVPEARLS04’ is a naturally-occurring, whole-plant mutation of an unnamed Echeveria shaviana plant (not patented) which was discovered by the inventor in March of 2009 at a commercial greenhouse in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. The mutation was noted for its purple foliage and strongly undulated leaf apices.
Asexual Reproduction: Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘OVPEARLS04’, by way of rooting leaf cuttings, was first initiated in March of 2009 at the inventor's commercial greenhouse in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. Through eight subsequent generations, the unique features of this cultivar have proven to be stable and true to type.
The cultivar ‘OVPEARLS04’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘OVPEARLS04’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘OVPEARLS04’ as a new and distinct Echeveria cultivar:
-
- 1. ‘OVPEARLS04’ exhibits a compact globular plant form; and
- 2. ‘OVPEARLS04’ exhibits an abundance of foliage, held upright, and tightly held in a basal rosette; and
- 3. ‘OVPEARLS04’ exhibits flabellate foliage with a heavily undulated, praemorse apex; and
- 4. ‘OVPEARLS04’ exhibits heavily pruinose foliage which gives the foliage a purple hue.
The following observations and measurements made in October of 2017 describe averages from a sample set of six specimens of 1 year old ‘OVPEARLS04’ plants grown in 17 cm nursery containers at commercial greenhouse in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. Plants were produced using conventional greenhouse production protocols for Echeveria which consisted of minimal subsurface irrigation, fertilizer applications, and chemical pest control measures against thrips as required. No other chemical pest and disease control measures were taken. Plants were grown under approximately 50 percent shade after propagation and later exposed to full sun once they began to mature. No photoperiodic treatments or artificial light was given to the plants.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that certain characteristics will vary with older or, conversely, with younger plants. ‘OVPEARLS04’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. Where dimensions, sizes, colors and other characteristics are given, it is to be understood that such characteristics are approximations or averages set forth as accurately as practicable. The phenotype of the variety may differ from the descriptions set forth herein with variations in environmental, climatic and cultural conditions. Color notations are based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, The Royal Horticultural Society, London, 2015 (sixth edition).
A botanical description of ‘OVPEARLS04’ and a comparison with the parent and closest known comparator is provided below.
