Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant named ‘ICH10162B’, characterized by its double-type, light purple-pink colored inflorescences that are deep violet-blue colored when grown under acidic soil conditions, dark green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, upright growth habit, is disclosed.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Hydrangea macrophylla.
Variety denomination: ‘ICH10162B’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant botanically known as Hydrangea macrophylla and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘ICH10162B’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Kakegawa, Japan during June 2010. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Hydrangea cultivars that have double-type inflorescences with attractive coloration.
The new Hydrangea cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is Ohayo, not patented, characterized by its double-type, purple-pink colored inflorescences (violet-blue colored when grown under acidic soil conditions), dark green-colored foliage, and vigorous, upright growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is a proprietary Hydrangea macrophylla breeding selection coded 08-23A, not patented, characterized by its single-type, deep purple-pink colored inflorescences (deep violet-blue when grown under acidic soil conditions) with the sterile florets having a white margin, dark green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, upright growth habit. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during June 2012 in a controlled environment in in Kakegawa, Japan.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since June 2012 in Kakegawa, Japan and West Grove, Pa. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘ICH10162B’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant:

- 1. Double-type, light purple-pink colored inflorescences that are deep violet-blue colored when grown under acidic soil conditions;
- 2. Dark green-colored foliage; and
- 3. Moderately vigorous, upright growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in having deeper colored inflorescences when grown under acidic soil conditions and less growth vigor. Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the male parent primarily in flower type and sterile floret margin color.
Of the many commercially available Hydrangea cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is Ruby Blossom ‘B-003’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,823. However, in comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘B-003’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have more sterile florets per inflorescence than plants of ‘B-003’;
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have a sepal margin different from plants of ‘B-003’; and
- 3. Plants of the new cultivar have darker colored foliage than plants of ‘B-003’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘ICH10162B’. The plants were approximately 11 month old and grown in 3-gallon containers in an outdoor nursery in West Grove, Pa. for approximately 8 months then transferred for flowering to greenhouse conditions for approximately 3 months.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in March 2017 under natural light conditions in West Grove, Pa.
The following descriptions and measurements describe approximately 11 month old plants produced from cuttings from stock plants. The plants were grown in 3-gallon containers utilizing a soilless growth medium in an outdoor nursery in West Grove, Pa. for approximately 8 months. To flower, plants were moved to greenhouse conditions for approximately 3 months. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at 74° F. to 80° F. (23° C. to 27° C.) during the day and approximately 66° F. to 70° F. (19° C. to 21° C.) during the night. Greenhouse light levels of 5,010 footcandles to 8,016 footcandles were maintained during the day. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
