Abstract
A new and distinct Geum plant named ‘TNGEURO’ characterized by red-orange flower color, heavy flowering, dense, deep green foliage with large attractive leaves, a compact, mounding habit, long bloom time, and excellent vigor.
Description
Botanical designation: Geum hybrid.
Variety denomination: ‘TNGEURO’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Geum plant given the name ‘TNGEURO’. Geum is in the family Rosaceae. The new cultivar was bred using unknown, unnamed proprietary plants. The new cultivar was selected for its superior habit and flowering.
Compared to Geum ‘Fire Storm’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23,179), the new cultivar is much more compact and the flowers are single to semi-double rather than double.
Compared to Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,041), the new cultivar has a more compact habit, shorter flowering stems, a longer bloom time, and darker orange flowers.
Compared to Geum coccineum ‘Koi’ (unpatented), a seed mix, the new cultivar has a bigger habit with more crowns and flowers.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘TNGEURO’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘TNGEURO’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
-
- 1. red-orange flower color,
- 2. heavy flowering,
- 3. dense, deep green foliage with large attractive leaves,
- 4. compact, mounding habit,
- 5. long bloom time, and
- 6. excellent vigor.
This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (cuttings and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by cuttings and tissue culture using standard micropropagation techniques with terminal and lateral shoots, as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.
The following is a detailed description of the new Geum cultivar based on observations of a 1 and a half year old specimens growing in the field full sun under typical outdoor conditions in May in Canby, Oreg. Canby is Zone 8 on the USDA Hardiness map. Temperatures range from a high of 95° F. in August to an average of 32° F. in January. Normal rainfall in Canby is 42.8 inches per year. The color descriptions are all based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2007, 5th edition.
