Abstract
A new and distinct hybrid of Heuchera plant characterized by medium size, white-veiled, red veined green leaves, showy pink flowers, a mounding habit and excellent vigor.
Description
Botanical denomination: Heuchera hybrid.
Variety designation: ‘Peppermint Spice’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Heuchera and given the cultivar name of ‘Peppermint Spice’. Heuchera is in the family Saxifragaceae. Heuchera ‘Peppermint Spice’ originated from a controlled cross between Heuchera 497-1-1 (an unpatented, proprietary plant) as the seed parent, and a massed population of unpatented, proprietary Heuchera ‘Green Spice’ hybrid as the pollen parent. This selection was made for its excellent foliage and flower form. Given its ornamental foliage and flower form, it is probable that Heuchera sanguinea, H. americana, H. cylindrica, and H. micrantha are in its parentage.
This new Heuchera is distinguished by:
-
- 1. White-veiled green leaves with red veins;
- 2. Showy pink flowers;
- 3. Once blooming;
- 4. Mounding habit;
- 5. Excellent vigor.
This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (division and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by division and tissue culture using standard micropropagation techniques with terminal and lateral shoots, as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may change with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.
The drawing shows a one-year-old plant of Heuchera ‘Peppermint Spice’ growing in a one gallon container in the shade house in May in Canby, Oreg.
The following is a detailed description of the new Heuchera cultivar based on observations taken in May of a one-year-old specimen grown in a two gallon container in an open air shade house with 50% shade cover and added irrigation in the summer months in Canby, Oreg. Canby is Zone 8 on the USDA Hardiness map. Temperatures range from an average high of 95 degrees F. in August to an average of 32 degrees F. in January. Normal rainfall in Canby is 42.8 inches per year. The color descriptions are all based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart.

-
- Pest and disease tolerance: This new Heuchera has not proved to be resistant to pathogens or pests common to Heuchera.
Compared to Heuchera americana ‘Green Space’, an unpatented plant, this new Heuchera has flowering stems that are much shorter, having 0 to 1 cauline leaf rather than multiple leaves, and have flowers that are showy and pink rather than small and yellow green.
Compared to Heuchera 497-1-1 (unpatented, proprietary plant) this new Heuchera differs primarily in flower color.
Compared to Heuchera ‘Strawberry Candy’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,195), this new variety is much larger overall. It has larger leaves with more distinct white veiling and reddish veins rather than green veins.
