Abstract

A new and distinct Lagerstroemia cultivar named ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ is disclosed, characterized by early flowering of vibrant purple blooms, compact plant stature and good branching. Plants are floriferous. The new variety is a Lagerstroemia, normally used for ornamental horticulture purposes.

Description

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ as a new and distinct Lagerstroemia cultivar:
    • 1. Vibrant purple flowers.
    • 2. Early flowering.
    • 3. Very floriferous plants.
    • 4. Compact plant stature.
    • 5. Plants with good branching.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, Lagerstroemia ‘Violet Filli’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ differ in the following;
    • 1. Plants of the new variety are taller and more open in habit.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety are darer and brighter purple. The comparator has lighter lavender flowers.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ are comparable to the patented commercial variety Lagerstroemia ‘Early Bird Purple’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,718. The two Lagerstroemia varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Darker/brighter purple. The comparator has lighter purple flowers.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ grown in a greenhouse in Grand Haven Mich. Age of the plant photographed is approximately 2 years old from a rooted cutting. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart sixth 2015 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SMLIPURPLE101’ plants grown in a poly house during Summer of 2015 in Grand Haven, Mich. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and from approximately 5° C. to 10° C. during the night. General light conditions are normal sunlight and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
