Abstract
A new and distinct Verbena cultivar named ‘DVERCASRED’ is disclosed, characterized by a trailing growth habit, early flowering, tolerance to powdery mildew and an abundance of red flowers. Additionally the new variety is tolerant to high temperatures. The new variety is a Verbena, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Verbena hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘DVERCASRED’.
The new Verbena cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Verbena varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The cross resulting in this new variety was made during July of 2011.
The seed parent is the unpatented, proprietary variety referred to as Verbena ‘VE-Z-279’. The pollen parent is the unpatented, propriety variety referred to as Verbena ‘VE-11-3901’. The new variety was discovered in May of 2012 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2011 crossing, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in Summer of 2012 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in more than 10 successive generations.
The cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DVERCASRED’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DVERCASRED’ as a new and distinct Verbena cultivar:

- 1. Flowering begins early.
- 2. Trailing plant habit.
- 3. Tolerant of powdery mildew.
- 4. Highly floriferous plants produce an abundance of red flowers.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, Verbena ‘VE-Z-279’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ differ in the following;

- 1. Trailing growth habit, whereas the seed parent has a mounded growth habit.
- 2. Greater vigor than the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent, Verbena ‘VE-11-3901’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ differ in the following;

- 1. Plants of ‘DVERCASRED’ tolerate powdery mildew, whereas the pollen parent is sensitive to powdery mildew.
- 2. Plants of ‘DVERCASRED’ are resistant to low temperatures, whereas the foliage of the pollen parent turns yellow in low temperatures.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DVERCASRED’ are comparable to the unpatented commercial variety Verbena ‘Vepita Fire Red’. The two Verbena varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DVERCASRED’ differs in the following:

- 1. The new variety has larger flowers.
- 2. Trailing growth habit. The comparator's growth habit is mounded.
- 3. Red flowers. The comparator's flowers are dark red.
- 4. Tolerant of powdery mildew. The comparator is sensitive to powdery mildew.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DVERCASRED’ grown in a nursery, in a 13 cm pot. Age of the plant photographed is approximately 12 weeks from a rooted cutting.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2001 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DVERCASRED’ plants grown outdoors during the Spring, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The growing temperature ranged from 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and from 10° C. to 15° C. during the night. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
