Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Hypericum plant named ‘SMHKBF’, characterized by its compact and uniformly low mounding plant habit; blue-colored leaves; freely flowering habit; bright yellow-colored flowers; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Hypericum kalmianum.
Cultivar denomination: ‘SMHKBF’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct Hypericum plant, botanically known as Hypericum kalmianum and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘SMHKBF’.
The new Hypericum plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Grand Haven, Mich. The objective of the breeding program is to create new compact Hypericum plants with uniform plant habit and unique leaf color.
The new Hypericum plant originated from an open-pollination during the summer of 2007 in Grand Haven, Mich. of Hypericum kalmianum ‘Very Blue’, not patented, as the female, or seed parent with an unknown selection of Hypericum kalmianum, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Hypericum plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated open-pollination in a controlled environment in Grand Haven, Mich. in early 2009.
Asexual reproduction of the new Hypericum plant by softwood cuttings in Grand Haven, Mich., since the June, 2009 has shown that the unique features of this new Hypericum plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the new Hypericum have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMHKBF’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMHKBF’ as a new and distinct Hypericum plant:

- 1. Compact and uniformly low mounding plant habit.
- 2. Blue-colored leaves.
- 3. Freely flowering habit.
- 4. Bright yellow-colored flowers.
- 5. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Hypericum differ from plants of the female parent, ‘Very Blue’, in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Hypericum are more compact than plants of ‘Very Blue’.
- 2. Plants of the new Hypericum are more uniform than plants of ‘Very Blue’.
- 3. Plants of the new Hypericum are more freely flowering than plants of ‘Very Blue’.
Plants of the new Hypericum can also be compared to plants of Hypericum ‘Bleu Velvet’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Grand Haven, Mich., plants of the new Hypericum differed primarily from plants of ‘Bleu Velvet’ in plant habit as plants of the new Hypericum were shorter than plants of ‘Bleu Velvet’. In addition, leaf color of plants of the new Hypericum was brighter blue than leaf color of plants of ‘Bleu Velvet’.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Hypericum plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Hypericum plant.

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the summer in three-gallon containers in an outdoor nursery in Grand Haven, Mich. and under commercial practices typical of commercial production. Plants were three years old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
