Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Heliopsis plant named ‘Sunstruck’, characterized by its single-type, golden-yellow colored inflorescences, green and white variegated foliage, and moderately vigorous, compact-mounded growth habit, is disclosed.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Heliopsis helianthoides.
Variety denomination: ‘Sunstruck’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Heliopsis plant botanically known as Heliopsis helianthoides and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Sunstruck’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Elburn, Ill. during July 2009. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Heliopsis cultivars having large inflorescences, novel foliage color, and compact habits.
The new Heliopsis cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Heliopsis helianthoides breeding selection coded 3652-C5, not patented, characterized by its semi-double type, medium golden-yellow colored inflorescences, medium green and white variegated foliage, low vigor, and compact-mounded growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Heliopsis helianthoides breeding selection coded 3649-A2, not patented, characterized by its anemone-type, dark golden-yellow colored inflorescences, medium green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, upright growth habit. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during July 2010 in a controlled environment in Elburn, Ill.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since July 2010 in Elburn, Ill. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘Sunstruck’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Heliopsis plant:

- 1. Single-type, golden-yellow colored inflorescences;
- 2. Green and white variegated foliage; and
- 3. Moderately vigorous, compact-mounded growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in flower type and in having larger-sized inflorescences. Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the male parent primarily in foliage color and growth habit.
Of the many commercially available Heliopsis cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is ‘Loraine Sunshine’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,690. However, in comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Loraine Sunshine’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar are more compact than, as measured by plant height and plant width, than plants of ‘Loraine Sunshine’;
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have more ray florets than plants of ‘Loraine Sunshine’; and
- 3. Plants of the new cultivar have a ray floret color that is more orange-colored than plants of ‘Loraine Sunshine’.
In addition the new cultivar can be compared to ‘Summer Green’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23,410. However, in comparison, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Summer Green’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have a different stem color than plants of ‘Summer Green’;
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have more ray florets than plants of ‘Summer Green’; and
- 3. Plants of the new cultivar have a ray floret color that is more orange-colored than plants of ‘Summer Green’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘Sunstruck’. The plants were grown in Elburn, Ill. in 1-gallon containers for approximately 36 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium. This time period includes an approximately 12 week dormant period. Plants were pinched at time of transplant and again after 4 weeks of growth.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2007 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in June 2013 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Ill.
The following descriptions and measurements describe plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a glass-covered greenhouse under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in Elburn, Ill. in 1-gallon containers for approximately 36 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium. This time period includes an approximately 12 week dormant period. Plants were pinched at time of transplant and again after 4 weeks of growth. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 50° F. to 70° F. (10.0° C. to 21.1° C.) during the day and approximately 35° F. to 50° F. (1.7° C. to 10.0° C.) during the night. No supplemental lighting was provided. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
