Abstract
A new and distinct Phalaenopsis hybrid cultivar named ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ is disclosed, characterized by unique coloration of the petals and overall small, compact plant habit. The new variety is a Phalaenopsis, and is normally used as an ornamental plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Phalaenopsis hybrid.
Variety denomination: ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’.
The new cultivar was discovered as part of a commercial breeding program, carried out in a commercial greenhouse in Chang-Hwa, Taiwan. The inventor, Lai Pen-chih, a citizen of Taiwan, discovered the new variety as the result of the crossing of the female parent, the unpatented variety Phalaenopsis hybrid ‘Ho's Little Caroline’ with the male parent, the unpatented variety Phalaenopsis hybrid ‘Ever-Spring King.’ The crossing was performed in April 2006, the new variety was discovered in May 2006 by the inventor.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ by tissue culture was performed at a commercial laboratory in Chang-Hwa, Taiwan in 2006. Since that time, many generations have been reproduced, and have shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type through successive generations.
The cultivar ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ as a new and distinct Phalaenopsis hybrid cultivar:

- 1. Highly compact overall plant.
- 2. Unique white and purple bloom coloration.
- 3. Rough sepal and petal texture.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ are similar to plants of the seed parent variety unpatented Phalaenopsis hybrid ‘Ho's Little Caroline’ in most horticultural characteristics. However, plants of the new cultivar ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ produce rough sepals and petals compared to smooth sepals and petal in the seed parent. Additionally, plants of ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ produce white flowers with purple stripes and spots, whereas ‘Ho's Caroline’ produces white flowers with pink spots.

The most similar commercial variety, outside of the parent varieties is Phalaenopsis‘Little Gem Stripe Lee’. ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ and ‘Little Gem Stripe Lee 23’ are similar in some horticultural characteristics, including over all short plant habit. However, ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ is shorter. Additionally, ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ has a stable and consistent color pattern to the flower, whereas ‘Little Gem Stripe Lee 23’ does not have a consistent color pattern on the flower. A search by the inventor does not reveal any other highly dwarf, stable white and purple Phalaenopsis varieties for comparison.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ grown in a greenhouse. The pot size is a commercial 11 cm container. The plant shown is approximately 2 years old. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘TAIDA LITTLE ZEBRA’ plants grown in a commercial greenhouse in Chang-Hwa, Taiwan. Temperature ranged from 20° C. to 35° C. day and from 18° C. to 20° C. night. Light levels ranged from 10,000 lux as a young plant to approximately 20,000 lux for a flowering plant. Plants described began flowering in the Fall. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical flowering types. No chemical or photoperiodic treatments were given.
