Abstract
A new cultivar of Allamanda plant named ‘Siam Snow’ that is characterized by flowering during low light conditions and creamy white flowers.
Description
Botanical classification: Allamanda carthartica.
Variety denomination: ‘Siam Snow’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Allamanda plant botanically known as Allamanda carthartica and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Siam Snow’.
The cultivar ‘Siam Snow’ was discovered and selected in 2002 as a single plant in Upper Stone via Ingram, Queensland, Australia. ‘Siam Snow’ was discovered growing in an outdoor bed of unnamed Allamanda cultivars. The exact parents are unknown.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘Siam Snow’ first occurred by terminal cuttings in 2003 in De Lier, The Netherlands. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Allamanda cultivar ‘Siam Snow’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Siam Snow’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other existing known varieties of Allamanda.
-
- 1. Allamanda ‘Siam Snow’ exhibits flowering during low light conditions.
- 2. Allamanda ‘Siam Snow’ exhibits creamy white colored flowers.
The closest comparison cultivars are plants of the Allamanda species. ‘Siam Snow’ is distinguishable from plants of the species by the following characteristics:
-
- 1. ‘Siam Snow’ has creamy white flowers.
- 2. ‘Siam Snow’ exhibits longer lasting flowers.
- 3. ‘Siam Snow’ flowers readily under low light conditions.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Allamanda ‘Siam Snow’. The plant in the photograph shows an overall view of a 2 year old plant. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed description of the new Allamanda cultivar named ‘Siam Snow’. Data was collected in Boskoop, The Netherlands from 2 year old glass greenhouse grown plants in 15 cm. diameter containers. The time of year was Winter and the temperature range was 20-22 degrees Centigrade during the day and 20-22 degrees Centigrade at night. The light level was natural outdoor light. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species. ‘Siam Snow’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
