Description

Feb. 23, 1960 F. MEILLAND Plant Pat. 1,911
ROSE PLANT Filed Jan. 8, 1959 1,911 ROSE PLANT Francis Meilland,.deceased, late of CapdAntibes, France, y Marie Louise Meilland, nee, Paolino, legal representative, Cap dAntibes, France Application January 8, 1959, Serial No. 7 85,767
1 Claim. c1. 47+
. a new red rose variety. which combines the fiowerform of the parent variety Happiness with the orange and orange-scarlet flower color tonesof Independence and Floradora. While the parents of the new variety ex hibited some of the desired objectives, each lacked certain qualities which would make them worthy of commercial interest, and the deceased therefore sought to fully achieve the desired objectives by a carefully planned breeding program. These objectives were ultimately fully achieved in the new variety, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics which are outstanding in the new variety and which distinguish it from its parents as well as from all other varieties of which the deceased was aware:
(1) An excellent bloom form;
(2) A fine and tough petal texture which is unusual for a red rose; and
(3) An intense, velvety cardinal red general color tonality of the blooms, overlaid with maroon.
Asexual reproduction of the new variety by budding, as performed in France and also at West Grove, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompanying drawing shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of the new variety in different stages of development and as depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of the new variety, with color terminology in accordance with the Horticultural Colour Chart of the Royal Horticultural Society, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are obvious:
