Abstract
A new and distinct Chrysanthemum plant cultivar is disclosed, characterized by small daisy type inflorescences, consistent flowering response to short days, blooming consistently after 52 days of short day length, dark lavender ray florets, and a moderate branching habit.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Chrysanthemum morifolium.
Variety denomination: ‘GG GOFRT 05’.
The new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ was originated from a cross made by Leo Van Zanten in a planned breeding program in December 2001 between the unpatented male parent ‘Elgon’ and the unpatented female parent ‘Tasman’. The new cultivar was discovered and selected by Leo Van Zanten in October 2002 in Oxnard, Calif.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ by vegetative cuttings was performed in Oxnard, Calif., and has shown that the unique features of this new cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type on successive generations.
The cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, daylength, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘GG GOFRT 05’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘GG GOFRT 05’ as a new and distinct Chrysanthemum cultivar:
-
- 1. Small daisy type inflorescence;
- 2. Dark lavender ray florets;
- 3. Moderate branching habit; and
- 4. Blooming consistently after 52 days of short day length.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ are similar to plants of the male parent ‘Elgon’ in most horticultural characteristics, however plants of the new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ have more yellow-green foliage than the parent. Also, ‘GG FRT 05’ has more lavender color ray florets than the red-purple ray florets of the parent and ‘GG FRT 05’ has a smaller inflorescence diameter.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ are similar to plants of the female parent ‘Tasman’ in most horticultural characteristics, however plants of the new cultivar ‘GG GOFRT 05’ has dark lavender ray florets compared to the white florets of the female parent. Also, ‘GG FRT 05’ is smaller in both height and plant spread. Finally, ‘GG FRT 05’ has smaller leaves and smaller inflorescences.
In comparison to the commercially available variety ‘Davis’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 7,325), ‘GG GOFRT 05’ is smaller in height. Additionally, the new variety ‘GG GOFRT 05’ has more true green foliage and more lavender-purple than the red-purple ray florets of ‘Davis.’ Further, the new variety ‘GG GOFRT 05’ has smaller inflorescences.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘GG GOFRT 05’ grown in a 6.5-inch container. Five cuttings were used in the pot, planted late October and grown in a greenhouse. The colors are as nearly true as is reasonably possible in a color representation of this type.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘GG GOFRT 05’ plants grown in Oxnard, Ventura County, Calif., during the winter months. The growing temperature in the greenhouse from 67° F. and 78° F. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical flowering types.
