Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Phlox plant named ‘Delilah’, characterized by its upright and strong plant habit; strong foliage; red purple-colored flowers; freely and continuous flowering habit; and good garden performance.

Description

Botanical designation: Phlox paniculata.
Cultivar denomination: ‘Delilah’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Phlox plant, botanically known as Phlox paniculata, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name Delilah.
The new Phlox is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program was to create new Phlox cultivars with attractive flower coloration.
The new Phlox originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in 1998 in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands of the Phlox paniculata cultivar Lizzy, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,574, as the female, or seed, parent with the Phlox paniculata cultivar Rowie, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Phlox was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands in 1999.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings at Rijpwetering, The Netherlands since 2000, has shown that the unique features of this new Phlox are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Plants of the cultivar Delilah have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light level without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Delilah’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Delilah’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Phlox:
    • 1. Upright and strong plant habit.
    • 2. Strong foliage.
    • 3. Red purple-colored flowers.
    • 4. Freely and continuous flowering habit.
    • 5. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Phlox differ primarily from plants of the parent cultivars primarily in flower color as plants of the cultivar Lizzy have lighter red purple-colored flowers and plants of the cultivar Rowie have pink-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Phlox can be compared to the Phlox paniculata cultivar Van Gogh, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, plants of the new Phlox differed from plants of the cultivar Van Gogh primarily in plant height as plants of the new Phlox were much shorter than plants of the cultivar Van Gogh.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Phlox.
The photograph on the first sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Delilah’.
The photograph at the top of the second sheet is a close-up view of typical flowers of ‘Delilah’. The photograph at the bottom of the second sheet is a close-up view of the upper surface of a typical leaf of ‘Delilah’.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The aforementioned photographs, following observations and measurements describe plants grown in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, in an outdoor nursery and under commercial production practices during the summer. Plants were about one year old when the photographs and description were taken. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 14 to 32° C. and night temperatures ranged from 7 to 18° C. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
