Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant named ‘Petpur’ characterized by its trailing, outwardly spreading and mounded plant habit, freely branching habit, freely flowering habit, single flowers that are deep purple in color, and good garden performance.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Petunia hybrida.
Varietal denomination: ‘Petpur’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant botanically known as Petunia hybrida and referred to by the cultivar name ‘Petpur.’
The new Petunia is the product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. The new Petunia cultivar is freely flowering with trailing and spreading plant habit and attractive leaf and flower coloration.
The new Petunia originated from a cross-pollination made by the inventor in August 1999 of a proprietary selection of Petunia hybrida identified as code number ‘Y 927,’ not patented, as the female, or seed parent, with a proprietary selection of Petunia hybrida identified as code number ‘X 909,’ not patented, as the male, or pollen parent. The new Petunia was selected as a single plant from the resulting progeny of the cross-pollination in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, Netherlands in June 2000.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal vegetative cuttings since June 2000, in Enkhuizen, Netherlands has shown that the unique features of this new Petunia are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the cultivar ‘Petpur’ have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity and daylength without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Petspebl.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Petspebl’ as a new and distinct cultivar:

- 1. Trailing, outwardly spreading and mounded plant habit
- 2. Freely branching habit
- 3. Freely flowering habit
- 4. Single flowers that are deep purple in color
- 5. Good garden performance
In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Enkhuizen, Netherlands, plants of the new Petunia differed from plants of the female parent selection in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Petunia have a slightly mounded habit whereas the flowers of the female selection are more flat, also the flowers of the new Petunia are slightly bigger for the flowers of the female selection are smaller.
In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Enkhuizen, Netherlands, plants of the new Petunia differed from plants of the male parent selection in the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new Petunia and the male parent selection differed in flower size the flowers of the new Petunia have smaller flowers that the plants of the male parent selection.
Plants of the new Petunia ‘Petpur’ differ from the Petunia cultivar Surfinia ‘Shihi purple’ (Shihi Brilliant), not patented, in flower shape. The flower petals of the new Petunia have a more rounded apex whereas the flowerspetals of the Petunia cultivar Surfinia ‘Shihi purple’ have a more pointed apex.
The new Petunia also differs from the Petunia cultivar Surfinia ‘Shihi purple’ foliage color. The foliage of the new Petunia is more dark green whereas the foliage of the cultivar Surfinia ‘Shihi purple’ is lighter in color.
The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Petunia.
The observations and measurements describe plants grown in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands., practice circumstances outdoor in windowboxes during the summer with day temperatures ranging from 18 to 25° C. and night temperatures ranging from 10 to 14° C. Plants used for the photographs and description were about 12 weeks from planting rooted cuttings.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
