Abstract

A new and distinct Torenia plant named ‘Dancatpur’ characterized bydelicate, funnel form flowers consisting of four petals in which the top petal is pale violet-blue, RHS 91C, and the lower and side petals are deep violet-blue, RHS 89A, with a yellow-green blotch in the center of the lower petal, RHS 154A; its bushy and cascading growth habit, its dense branching which gracefully cascades from hanging baskets; its early flowering response and year round blooming in a moderate climate; its suitability as an annual for hanging pots outdoors under partial shade; and its optimal growth at the moderate temperature range of 15-25° C.

Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Torenia sp.
Variety denomination: ‘Dancatpur’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Torenia plant, botanically known as Torenia sp. of the Scrophulariaceae family, hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Dancatpur’.
The new cultivar originated from a cross made in a controlled breeding program in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The female parent is the Torenia cultivar ‘Dantopkmn’ (patented, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,512). The male parent is an unnamed, unpatented bush type Torenia cultivar. ‘Dancatpur’ was discovered and selected by the inventor, Gabriel Danziger, as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by soft tip cuttings was first performed in May, 2002 in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, and has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for the new cultivar are firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction. The new cultivar reproduces true to type.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of ‘Dancatpur’ which in combination distinguish this Torenia as a new and distinct cultivar:
    • 1. Delicate, funnel form flowers consisting of four petals in which the top petal is pale violet-blue, RHS 91C, and the lower and side petals are deep violet-blue, RHS 89A, with a yellow-green blotch in the center of the lower petal, RHS 154A;
    • 2. Bush, cascading growth, maintains compact rounded growth;
    • 3. Densely branched plant, gracefully cascading from hanging baskets;
    • 4. Early flowering and year round blooming in moderate climate;
    • 5. Suitable as an annual for hanging pots outdoors under partial shade; and
    • 6. Optimal growth at moderate temperature range of 15-25° C.
Plants of the new Torenia cultivar ‘Dancatpur’ differ from plants of the parental cultivar ‘Dantopkmn’ (patented) in the characteristics described in Table 1. Plants of the unnamed, male parental cultivar (unpatented) are no longer unavailable to provide a comparison to the new cultivar ‘Dancatpur’.

Of the many commercial cultivars known to the inventor, the most similar in comparison to ‘Dancatpur’ is the Torenia sp. cultivar ‘Violet Moon’ (unpatented) in the characteristics described in Table 2.

The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length without any change in the genotype of the plant. The following observations, measurements and values describe the new cultivar as grown in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel under conditions, which closely approximate those generally used in commercial practice.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The following observations, measurements and values describe the new cultivar as grown in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel under conditions, which closely approximate those generally used in commercial practice. Optimally, ‘Dancatpur’ is used as a pot plant, grown outdoors in moderate climate, indoors during winter. Irrigation and fertilization is recommended on a regular basis. ‘Dancatpur’ is best grown in full sunlight; partial shade is required in mid summer. A fully grown ‘Dancatpur’ plant takes 3 months. ‘Dancatpur’ blooms year-round in moderate climate.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart (R.H.S.), except where general colors of ordinary significance are used. Color values were taken under daylight conditions at approximately noon in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
The age of the plants described is 3 months. The ‘Dancatpink’ plants described were grown indoors in 16 cm pots in a glass greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, with the day temperatures ranging from 18° C. to 35° C. and night temperatures ranging from 16° C. to 25° C. Plants of ‘Dancatpink’ were fertilized up to a level of 59 ppm N, 35.4 ppm P and 94.4 ppm K.

      • Bud.—Shape: Oblong, cylindrical, ellipsoid, 5 winged. Size: Length: About 25 mm. Diameter: About 10 mm. Color: Deep violet-blue, RHS 89A, to pale violet-blue, RHS 91C, to green, RHS 143B (apex to base). Texture: Pubescence on winged edges.
