Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Sutera plant named ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’, characterized by its outwardly spreading plant habit; vigorous growth habit; freely and continuous branching habit; freely flowering habit; large violet-colored flowers; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical classification/cultivar designation: Sutera halimifolia cultivar Maxi Mauve Blue.
The present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Sutera plant, botanically known as Sutera halimifolia, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’.
The new Sutera is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in George, South Africa. The objective of the breeding program is to create new Suteras with large and attractive flowers.
The new Sutera originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in September, 1998 of two unnamed selections of Sutera halimifolia, not patented. The new Sutera was chosen as a single plant from the resulting progeny of the cross-pollination by the Inventor in July, 1999, in a controlled environment in George, South Africa.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken in George, South Africa since November, 2000, has shown that the unique features of this new Sutera are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the cultivar Maxi Mauve Blue have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Sutera:
-
- 1. Outwardly spreading plant habit.
- 2. Vigorous growth habit.
- 3. Freely and continuous branching habit.
- 4. Freely flowering habit.
- 5. Large violet-colored flowers.
- 6. Good garden performance.
Compared to plants of the parent selections, plants of the new Sutera have larger and darker green-colored leaves and larger flowers. In addition, plants of the new Sutera and the parent selections differ in flower coloration.
Compared to plants of other selections of Sutera halimifolia known to the Inventor, plants of the new Sutera are more vigorous, more freely branching and have larger flowers.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which more accurately describe the colors of the new Sutera.
The photograph at the top of the sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’ grown in a 15-cm container.
The photograph at the bottom of the sheet comprises a close-up view of the typical flowers and leaves of ‘Maxi Mauve Blue’.
The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown in Bonsall, Calif., in an outdoor nursery under full sunlight conditions during the spring with day temperatures ranging from 18 to 35° C. and night temperatures ranging from 7 to 18° C. After planting rooted cuttings, plants were grown for about four weeks in 15-cm containers. Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
