Abstract
A new garden rose plant of the hybrid tea class which has abundant, pink flowers and attractive foliage. This new and distinct variety has shown to be uniform and stable in the resulting generations from asexual propagation.
Description
Botanical classification: Rosa hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘POULen009’.
The present invention constitutes a new and distinct variety of garden rose plant which originated from a controlled crossing between an unnamed female parent plant and the male parent plant ‘POULsyng’, described and illustrated in U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 09/268,299 dated Mar. 16, 1999, now abandoned. The two parents were crossed during the summer of 1995 and the resulting seeds were planted in a controlled environment in Fredensborg, Denmark. The new variety is named ‘POULen009’.
The new variety may be distinguished from its female parent, by the following combination of characteristics:

- 1. While the seed parent has a light pink flower bud. ‘POULen009’ has an orange flower bud.
- 2. The unnamed seed parent has small flowers of 5 to 8 cm. The same of ‘POULen009’ are 10 to 15 cm.
The new variety may be distinguished from its male pollen parent, ‘POULsyng’, by the following combination of characteristics:

- 1. While the pollen parent ‘POULsyng’ has a flower bud color of Orange Group 27B. The same of ‘POULen009’ is Yellow-Orange Group 19B.
- 2. Flowers of ‘POULsyng’ have 34 to 40 petals. ‘POULen009’ has 45 petals on average.
The objective of the hybridization of this rose variety was to create a new and distinct variety for garden use with unique qualities, such as:

- 1. Uniform and abundant pink flowers;
- 2. Vigorous, but compact growth when propagated both as a budded rose and on its own roots;
- 3. Disease resistance;
- 4. Exceptional fragrance.
This combination of qualities is not present in previously available commercial cultivars of this type, known to the inventors, and distinguish ‘POULen009’ from all other varieties of which we are aware.
As part of their rose development program, L. Pernille Olesen and Mogens N. Olesen germinated the seeds from the aforementioned hybridization during winter of 1995 and conducted evaluations on the resulting seedlings in a controlled environment in Fredensborg, Denmark.
‘POULen009’ was selected in the spring 1996 by the inventors as a single plant from the progeny of the aforementioned hybridization.
Asexual reproduction of ‘POULen009’ by traditional budding and rooted cuttings was first done by L. Pernille and Mogens N. Olesen in their nursery in Fredensborg, Denmark in July, 1996. This initial and other subsequent asexual propagations conducted in controlled environments have demonstrated that the characteristics of ‘POULen009’ are true to type and are transmitted from one generation to the next.
The accompanying color illustration shows as true as is reasonably possible to obtain in color photographs of this type, the typical characteristics of the buds, flowers, leaves, and stems, of ‘POULen009’.

The following is a description of ‘POULen009’, as observed in its growth in a field nursery in Jackson County, Oreg. Observed plants are 3 years of age, grown on Rosa multiflora understock. Color references are made using The Royal Horticultural Society (London, England) Colour Chart, 1995, except where common terms of color are used.
For a comparison, several physical characteristics of the rose variety ‘Masdoug1’, a non-patented, or applied for rose variety from Guillot and Massard (France) are compared to ‘POULen009’ in Chart 1.

- Bud color.—As sepals unfold, petals are Yellow-Orange Group 19B with intonations of Yellow Group 10C and longitudinal intonations of Red-Purple Group 58A. The color remains the same at ¼ opening.
- Sepals.—Upper Surface: Color: Green Group 143B with light intonations of Red-Purple Group 63B. Texture: Smooth and slightly pubescent. Lower Surface: Color: Yellow-Green Group 144A. Anthocyanic pigments the color of Greyed-Red Group 178A. Texture: Smooth with few stipitate glands, occurring on margins of sepals and on foliaceous appendages. Sepal Shape: Sepal apex is cirrhose. Base is flat at union with receptacle. Sepal Margin: Margins have weak foliaceous appendages on three of the five sepals. Size: 25 mm (l)×10 mm (w).
- Receptacle.—Surface: Smooth and glabrous. Shape: Urn-shaped. Size: 10 mm (h)×9 mm (w). Color: Yellow-Green Group 144B.
- Peduncle.—Surface: Smooth and glabrous. Length: 40 to 45 mm average length. Color: Yellow-Green Group 144C. Strength: Somewhat strong.
- Borne.—In small clusters. 5 to 6 flower buds per stem on average.

- Fragrance.—Very strong, sweet perfume like scent.
- Duration.—The blooms have a duration on the plant of approximately 10 to 14 days. Petals fall cleanly away from plant.
- Size.—Average flower diameter is 100 mm when open.
- Form.—General shape is a rosette with outer petals overlapping.

1. A new and distinct variety of rose plant of the hybrid tea rose class, substantially as herein illustrated and described as a distinct and novel rose variety due to its abundant pink, disease resistance, and extended period of bloom.
