Description
Feb. 26, 1957 E. s. BOERNER Plant Pat. 1,570
ROSE PLANT Filed May 16, 1956 United States Patent ROSE PLANT Eugene S. Boerner, Newark, N. Y., assignor to Jackson & Perkins Company, Newark, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application May 16, 1956, Serial No. 585,371
1 Claim. (Cl. 47-61) The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of rose plant of the large-flowered polyantha class, which was originated by me by crossing the variety Goldilocks (Plant Patent No. 672) with the variety Garnette (unpatented) The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new rose variety of the floribunda type which bears longer-lasting flowers that are suitable for use as cut flowers. This objective was fully achieved, along with other differentiating characteristics, as evidenced by the following features which are outstanding in the new variety:
(1) The improved long-lasting quality of the floribunda type flowers which have keeping qualities equal to that of the parent variety Garnette;
(2) The decided branching of the sepals, with a hood above the bud;
(3) The distinctive Thulite Pink, lightly overcast with Deep Rose Pink, general color tonality of the flowers, which is a new color in the cut flower field; and
(4) The distinctive Vandyke Red coloring in the new foliage, which is unusual in a rose of this color.
The foregoing characteristics and distinctions definitely differentiate my new variety from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of its class of which I am aware.
Asexual reproduction of my new variety by budding, as performed at Newark, New York, and also at Pleasanton, California, shows that the aforementioned characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompanying drawing shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and the flowers of my new variety in different stages of development and as depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this charactor.
The following is a detailed description of my new variety, with color terminology in accordance with Ridgways Color Standards and Nomenclature:
