Abstract

A calla lily plant particularly distinguished by dark pink spathe and maculated leaves.

Description

Genus and species: Zantedeschia species.
Variety denomination: ‘Hot Lips’.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
The present invention comprises a new and distinct cultivar of calla lily, botanically known as Zantedeschia spp, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Hot Lips’. The new cultivar is asexually reproduced from vegetative cuttings and tissue culture resulting from the cross of the seed parent ‘Pink Persuasion’ (patent status unknown)×pollen parent ‘Majestic Red’ (patent status unknown).
‘Hot Lips’ is a product of a planned breeding program intended to create new calla lily plants with dark pink spathes.
The new cultivar was created in 1998 in Tauranga New Zealand and has been asexually reproduced repeatedly by vegetative cuttings and tissue culture in New Zealand over a 3 year period. The present invention has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive propagations; and this novelty is firmly fixed.
DESCRIPTION OF PHOTOGRAPH
This new calla lily plant is illustrated by the accompanying photographs which show blooms, buds, and foliage of the plant in full color, the colors shown being as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures.
FIG. 1 shows the mature inflorescence;
FIG. 2 shows the overall plant habit;
FIG. 3 shows the inflorescence and leaves; and
FIG. 4 shows a close-up of the leaf.
DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW CULTIVAR
The following detailed descriptions set forth the distinctive characteristics of ‘Hot Lips’. The data which defines these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in New Zealand. The plant history was taken on 2 year old plants based on a 4 cm diameter tuber under New Zealand Spring conditions. Color references are primarily to The RHS Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London (RHS).
