Description

NOV. 1954 E. s. BOERNER Plant Pat. 1,320
' ROSE PLANT Filed Oct. 29, 1953 United States Patent 01" ROSE PLANT Eugene S. Boerner, Newark, N. Y., assignor to'Jackson & Perkins Company, Newark, N. Y., a corporation or New York Application October 29, 1953, Serial No. 389,186
1 Claim. (Cl. 47-61) The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of rose plant of the large-flowered polyantha class, which was originated by me by crossing the variety Mrs. R. M. Finc (unpatented) with an unnamed and unpatented seedling of the variety Improved La Fayette" (unpatented) X an unnamed and unpatented seedling of Rochester" (Plant Patent No. 131).
The primary objective in making this cross was to produce a new variety of the type of Mrs. R. M. Finch," but having flowers of better color and form, and having greater floriferousness, while at the same time retaining the heat-resistant qualities of the variety Mrs. R. M. Finch." This objective was fully achieved, as evidenced by the fact that my new variety is particularly characterized by the following unique combination of features:
(1) The habit of producing many large, flat clusters of 3-inch flowers of pale yellow-orange general color tonality, lightly overcast with Thulite pink color, said flowers having prominent stamens of lemon chrome color;
(2) The relatively rapid production of new clusters of flowers;
(3) The very long-lasting quality of the flowers, especially when exposed to the hot sun; and
(4) The fruity fragrance of the flowers.
These characteristics, taken together, definitely distinguish my new variety from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of its class.
Asexual reproduction of my new variety by budding at Newark, New York, and Pleasanton, California, shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeding propagations.
The accompanying drawing shows typical specimens of the flowers, foliage and stems of my new variety in different stages of development and depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of my new variety, with color terminology in accordance with Ridgways Color Standards and Nomenclature:
