Abstract

A new and distinct variety of geranium with improved floret form, improved leaf form, and a more uniform habit than the current variety ‘Marilyn’. This variety creates a uniform mound form with clean pink flowers which can be used in hanging baskets, containers or ground beds.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This discovery relates to a new and distinct cultivar of geranium identified by the name of ‘Sophia’, Breeder No. 4DG763 and Oglevee, Ltd. No. 5017. The new variety was discovered in a selective breeding program at Oglevee, Ltd. in Connellsville, Pa. The new variety was first asexually reproduced by tip cuttings on Jan. 23, 1995, in Connellsville, Pa. and has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive generations by cuttings. The seed parent to this new cultivar is a seedling floribunda white (Breeder No. 4DG185) (unpatented), and the pollen parent is the cultivar “Aurora” (unpatented).
The new cultivar, when grown in a glass greenhouse in Connellsville, Pa. using full light, 60° F. night temperature, 68° F. day temperature and grown in a soilless media with constant fertilizer at 200-250 ppm nitrogen and potassium, full light, has a response time from a rooted cutting to a flowering plant in a 10 cm pot flowered of six weeks.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The accompanying photographic drawing illustrates the new cultivar at 6 weeks from a rooted cutting, with the color being as nearly true as is possible with color illustrations of this type.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following detailed descriptions set forth the characteristics of the new cultivar. The data which define these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out at Oglevee, Ltd., 152 Oglevee Lane, Connellsville, Pa. 15425. The color readings on a plant grown in a 20 cm pot were taken indoors under 200-220 foot candles of cool white fluorescent light. Color references are to The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London and common color names.
