Abstract

A miniature rose plant having pink flowers; vigorous, upright, compact habit; flowers that are long-lasting on the plant; dark green foliage; and disease resistance to powdery mildew.

Description

The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of rose plant of the miniature class which was originated by me by crossing an unnamed seedling (whose parents are unnamed seedling×`Watercolor`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 4,031), with the variety `RUImired`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 5,770.
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new pot rose variety having pink flower color, flowers borne in small clusters, flowers between 11/2" to 3" when fully open, long lasting individual flowers, and an upright, compact plant habit suitable for greenhouse propagation from softwood cuttings. The objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the new variety and that distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of which I am aware:
1. Pink, 2" flowers borne in clusters of three to five flowers;
2. Vigorous, upright, compact habit;
3. Flowers that are long lasting on the plant;
4. Dark green, abundant foliage; and
5. Disease resistance to powdery mildew.
The seed hip is pear shaped, approximately 7/8" long by 5/8" wide, and when young is near Yellow-Green Group 144A. As the hip matures, it becomes Orange Group 24A in color. The flower has a light, sweet fragrance.
Asexual reproduction of this new variety by cuttings, as performed at Somis, Calif., shows that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompanying illustration shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of this new variety in different stages of development, depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society (London) Colour Chart, except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.
Parentage:
Seed parent.--Unnamed seedling (unnamed seedling×`Watercolor`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 4,031).
Pollen Parent.--`RUImired` (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 5,770).
Classification:
Botanical.--Rosa hybrida.
Commercial.--Miniature rose.
FLOWER
Observations made Jun. 29, 1998, from specimens grown in a greenhouse environment at Somis, Calif.
Blooming habit: Continuous.
Bud:
Size.--About 5/8 to 3/4 inch long when the petals start to unfurl.
Form.--The bud form is long, pointed ovoid.
Color.--When sepals first divide, bud color is Red-Purple Group 58B. When half blown, the upper sides of the petals are near Red-Purple Group 61D with a small Yellow Group 10C. crescent at the point of petal attachment, and the lower sides of the petals are Red-Purple Group 58C.
Sepals.--Color: Near Green Group 143A, with a prominent Yellow-Green Group 144C deltoid spot at sepal base, and a line of the same color that longitudinally bisects the sepal. Surface texture: Smooth. There are three lightly to normally appendaged sepals. There are two unappendaged sepals with hairy edges.
