Abstract
A new and distinct hybrid of Heuchera plant characterized by cherry-red flowers and chocolate-toned foliage.
Description
The present invention relates to a new and distinct hybrid of Heuchera, which originated as a cross-pollination of a select unnamed red-flowered Heuchera sanguinea (female parent, unpatented) and Heuchera `Whirlwind` (male parent, unpatented), a pink-flowered and bronze-leaved hybrid.
The new Heuchera is a result of a controlled cross of the aforementioned plants at Terra Nova Nurseries, Inc., in Canby, Oreg. This hybrid was selected from a large selection of seedlings. Seed and pollen parent plants were retained to observe habit and to compare with the instant plant. The new variety has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (division and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant and is unlike any Heuchera offered by any American nursery or book known to me as evidenced by the following characteristics:
(1) Summer, fall and winter: chocolate-toned foliage.
(2) Spring: cherry-red flowers.
Asexual propagation by division and tissue-culture as done in Tigard, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The drawing shows Heuchera `Cherries Jubilee` blooming in Canby, Oreg.
The following is a detailed description of the new Heuchera hybrid based on observations of specimens in Canby, Oreg. The color descriptions are all based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart and the American Rhododendron Society publication: "A Contribution Toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticultre."
