Abstract

A new plant variety of Chrysanthemum producing yellow and red bicolor flowers.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to a new and distinct variety of Chrysanthemum botanically classified as Dendranthema grandiflora. The varietal denomination of the new chrysanthemum is `Roadrunner`.
The female parent of the new variety is the variety known as `Serenade Empire` (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,803) and the male parent is an undistributed, unnamed seedling identified as `G12-C1`. The new variety has been asexually reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Ventura County, Calif. and the distinguishing characteristics are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
`Roadrunner` is a pot type chrysanthemum plant variety that produces yellow and red bicolor flowers.
Comparison With `Empire Serenade`
`Roadrunner` differs from `Empire Serenade` in flower color. The new variety produces yellow and red bicolor flowers and `Serenade`produces pink to red-purple flowers.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ILLUSTRATIONS
The accompanying photographs show a typical specimen of potted plant of the new variety and of flowers of the new variety, with colors being as nearly true as possible with illustrations of this type. Terminal peduncle about 3 to 4 cm, lower most peduncle about 6 cm.
FIG. 1 is a whole plant view (from above) of the new cultivar grown in a pot.
FIG. 2 shows inflorescence and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar in greater detail.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following description of the new variety is of specimens grown in a greenhouse in Ventura County, Calif. in the month of October. `Roadrunner` has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in the environment such as temperature, light intensity, day length and cultural conditions. The color designations herein are from The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms are used.
To produce a commercial product the plants may be pinched once ten days after planting which results in about 4 breaks per pinch. It has been observed that the shelf life of `Roadrunner` is about 22 days with the response time of about 6.5 weeks. No treatment with growth retardant is required. Useful growing conditions include night temperatures of about 62°-66° F., day temperatures of about 80°-85° F. and about 5,000 foot-candles of light.
