Dl2-48. OF? D 339752 EX DESIG N.
No. 33,752. Patented Dec. l8, I900. P. HIEN.
DRAW HEAD FOR CAR CUUPLINGS.
[Application filed Nov. 24. 1900.]
2 Shah-Shoot l.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP HIEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID S. \VEGG, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A DRAW-HEAD FOR CAR-COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Desi gn No. 33,752. dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed November 24.1900. Serial No. 37,682. Term of patent 14 years.
To all u'hont it 71m concern:
Beit known that I, PHILLIP HIEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original design for a Draw-Head for Car- Couplers, of which the following isa specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part thereof.
In said drawings, Figure l is a front clevation of a draw'head embodying my design. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. l) is a section taken on line 6 ll of Fig. 1.
As shown in thedrawings,my design is for a draw-head of the type known as the Master Car-Builders draw-head and is hollow and provided on its outer end, on one side of the axis, with apertured lugs c a, designed to receive between the same a swinging knuckle. Said draw-head is provided in the outer end with an opening designed to receive the tail of such a knuckle. 0n the inner wall of the draw-head, on the same side as said lugs, is provided a rearwardly-dirccted rih B, intogral with the side wall and forming a rearwardly-directed hook, as indicated in Fig. 5.
a (13 indicate longitudinal upwardly-extending webs on the inside of the draw-head integral with the bottom thereof, which extend forward to the opening in the front end. Said webs are approximately parallel each to each. A web a, corresponding to the web c depends from and is integral with the upper wall of the draw-head, and a transverse web a extends from each of said Webs and a to the side wall of thedraw-head adjacent to the hook or tug B. The web a at its front and is slotted, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 5, and a corresponding slot is formed in the an elevation of the side opposite that outer end of the draw-head in the same plane therewith.
The top of the draw-head is provided with an aperture extending downwardly therethrough along the inner side of the web a Said aperture is surrounded by an upwardlydirected flange C, integral with the top of the draw-head, and a corresponding flange is provided on the inner side of the draw-head, providing an elongated vertical socket, as shown in Figs. sand 6. Flangesc c, integral with the top of the draw-head, extend rearwardly, the flange 0 being integral with the rear side of the flange C. The rear side of said draw-head is provided with an upwardlyprojecting shouldersurmounted by the flange 0 which connects integrally with the flanges c c. A projection 0 extends laterally and horizontally from the top flange c and provides on its lower side a downwardly-projecting shoulder, as more fully illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
The material or essential features of my design are a draw-head for oar-couplers provided on one of its inner side walls with a rearwardly-directed hook, adownwardly-extending socket in the top of the draw-head, one side of the same being in alinement with a web within the draw-head, and on one side of said socket, on its upperend, a horizontal projection.
Having now described my design, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a draw-head for car-couplers, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILLIP IIIEN.
In presence of- CHARLES W. I-IILLs, L. J. DELSON.
