EBENEZER FISHER, 0F EGG HARBOR CITY, NEW JERSEY.
VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1909.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911. Serial No. 519,396.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER FISHER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Egg Harbor City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in vises and other clamping devices, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the actuating means will apply its pressure upon the sliding jaw on a slant that while sliding the jaw forward will also force it downward to its bed, and at the same'time lock its support of the actuating means in its adjusted position on the bed under the action of the actuating means so as to prevent any outward pressure of said means on a sliding aw after the initial binding takes place between the support and its bed.
The invention also has for an object the production of an actuating means and a support therefor that will be of simple construction and effective operation, and capable of use upon vises which have become ineffective through wear of their ratchet teeth or upon channeled, work-holding beds, such as the tops of planer machines, thereby doing away with the use of the clamping bolts usually employed in such machines.
Broadly stated the invention consists in a support for the actuating means, which support is provided with a clamping member adapted to fulcrum in an upward direction upon the bed member, and a clamping member, adjustable with relation to said support, adapted to engage the upper face of said bed in the rear of the other clamping member, whereby the strain of the actuating means will act to bind the said clamping members and the direction of the pressure of the actuating means'upon a clamping aw or the work be regulated as may be required.
The invention also consists in certain other novel features in the arrangement and construction of parts, all as hereinafter described, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a view in perspective of the combined ac tuating and locking means of the invention; Fig. 2, is a view in longitudinal, vertical section taken through the combined actuating and locking means anda portion of a ratchet bed of a vise, the parts being shown in looking position; Fig. 3, is a view in. perspective of a modification of the invention, suitable for use on planer beds and the like; and, Fig. 4, is a view in end elevation of a planer bed showing applied two of the devices of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base or bed member of a vise, which is provided with a central, longitudinal slot or channel 2 for slidably holding therein the clamping foot and the support for the actuating means, and is provided with ratchet teeth 3 on "each side of said slot or channel, and carries at one end a fixed jaw 4.
5 indicates the movable aw of the device, (both jaws 4L and 5 being shown in dotted lines) and is mounted to slide upon the bed 1, and is preferably formed with an inclined.
prises mainly the screw carrying member 8* and a base member 8 to which the member 8 is pivotally connected at its forward end by the pivot 9. The base member 8 is designed to extend through the slot or channel 2 and is provided with a shoe or sliding member 8 which is confined within the enlarged portion of the slot or channel and is adapted to be clamped against the upper wall of the enlarged portion of the slot. The base member 8 is provided with a pawl 10 which is pivoted at a point thereon above the bed 1 and in the rear of the pivot 9, which pawl is provided with its single ratchet 10 for engaging the ratchet teeth 3 on each side of the slot 2. At its free end, the pawl 10 carries a bearing support 10 for the rear end of the member 8 which bearing support is pivoted to the pawl and is adapted to be brought into supporting relation upon one or the other of the bearing faces 8 and 8 provided therefor on the member 8 for the purpose of varying the inclination of said member and its actuating screw, and also to enable the support 10 to be thrown down and out of the way so that the pawl can be lifted to free it from engagement with the ratchet surface of the bed.
lVith the parts of the support 8 and the ratchet engaging pawl 10 constructed and combined as above, the member 8 normally divides its support between the member 8" and the pawl 10, the rear end of the member 8 applying by the force of gravity sufiicient pressure upon the pawl to cause it to hold upon. the ratchet teeth 3 with sufficient force to maintain it there so that the actuating screw may apply some pressure to the movable jaw and during the application of such pressure to cause the member 8 to bear with greater force upon the pawl. and, through said pawl, to swing the member 8 on the pivot 9 sufficiently to raise the rear end of the shoe 8"- into clamping contact with the upper walls of the enlarged portion of the slot 2, thus firmly securing the screw carrying support 8 to the bed without any substantial change in the position of said screw relative to the movable jaw or cause the same when in its clamped position to change the direction of its pressure upon the jaw.
In the modification showndn Figs. 4 and 5, a construction is shown that is suitable for operation upon the usual form of planer beds, transversely to the clamp slots or channels. In Fig. 5 two of the devices are shown in opposing relation and clamping between them a block 11 representing the object to be operated upon. The actuating screw support 12 is preferably formed to be held in parallel relation to actuating screws 6, and at the forward end of the support there is provided a hooked member 13 which extends into the slot. 14 of the bed 15, the hooked end of which engages the overhanging portion of the bed 15 while the other end of the supporting member 12 is provided with a set screw 16 vertically arranged therein and by which the said member is adjusted to bring the actuating screw to a proper inclination. Vith the device properly positioned upon the bed 15 the pressure of the actuating screw upon the work 11, reacts upon the support to force the hook member upward against the overhanging wall of the bed, and the rear end of the support downward, the movement of the same being pivotal with the hook 13 constituting the fulcrum, and thereby forcing the set screw tightly against the upper surface of the bed.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. In a clamping device, an actuating means, and a support therefor, comprising a foot member adapted to engage the underside of a suitable bed, and a member pivoted thereto and carrying the said actuating means, and a pawl carried by said foot member, adapted to engage ratchet teeth on said bed and to be held engaged therewith by pressure from the other member under the strain of the actuating means thereon, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a clamping device, an actuating means, a support therefor comprising a foot member adapted to engage the underside of a suitable bed, and a member pivoted thereto and carrying said actuating means, a pawl pi votally carried by said foot member adapted to engage ratchet teeth on said bed, and means interposed between said pawl and the member carrying the said actuating means, whereby the pivotal movement of said member under the strain of the aetuating means will react upon said, pawl, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a clamping device, an actuating screw, and a support therefor, said support comprising a foot member adapted to engage an underside of a suitable bed, and a member pivoted thereto for su )porti1'1g the actuating screw, a pawl carried by the foot member, and means for supporting said screw carrying member on said pawl and bringing the said screw at an inclination to the bed, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a clamping device, an actuating screw, and a support therefor. said support comprising a foot member adapted to en gage an underside of a suitable bed, and a member pivoted thereto carrying the actuating screw, a pawl carried by the foot 1nemher, and a prop carried by said pawl adapted to be moved. into support-ing engagement with said screw carrying member, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a clamping device, an actuating screw, and a support therefor, said support comprising a foot member adapted to engage an underside of a suitable bed, and a member pivoted thereto carrying said screw, a pawl. carried by the foot member and a prop carried by said pawl adapted to be moved into supporting engagement at different points on said screw carrying member whereby to support the same at different inclinations, substantially as described and-for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EBENEZER FISHER.
