BOX-LID FASTENER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ll/IELZAR SHEPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Box-Lid Fasteners, and cleclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to box lid fasteners.
It has for its object an improved fastener adapted to hold together the lid and the body of the box securely, and one which can be readily opened without the use of keys or special tools, and can be sealed in its locked or closed position by an ordinary car seal.
In the drawings :Figure 1, is a perspective showing the fastener in position with the seal in place. Fig. 2, is a vertical cross section showing the hasp and bolt separately. Fig. 3, is a vertical cross section showing the hasp and the bolt in locked position.
The device is provided with a housing adapted to be secured to the body part of the box and a hasp adapted to be secured to the lid part of the box. The end of the hasp engages under the housing and is held in locked position by a screw bolt which passes into and projects through a hole in the hasp and when in this locked position a hole transverse the bolt is brought into register with holes in the housing and the stra of a car seal is passed through the holes holding the parts securely in position.
The housing 1 is provided with ears 2, 3 and a through which are holes for the passage of the means by which the housing is secured to the box; preferably the means employed are rivets 6. At the upper side of the housing is an opening 7 for the engagement therein of the hasp 8 which is bent to engage over the top of the lid 9 and is socured to the lid by rivets 10. The hasp is provided with a conical hole 11 that registers opposite the end of the screw bolt 12, which screw bolt engages through the front of the housing 1. The inner end of the screw bolt terminates with a head 13 which prevents it from being withdrawn from the housing, and with a conical terminal 14; projecting beyond the head which engages in Specification of Letters Patent.

the hole 11 of the hasp and draws the hasp into proper engagement with respect to the housing. One end 15 of the bolt projects beyond the conical part 14L of the head and projects beyond the housing and engages in a cavity 16 in the body of the box, giving the screw bolt hearings on each side of the hasp, one bearing against the housing and one bearing against the body of the box. The end of the bolt is provided with a transverse hole 18 that registers with holes 19 in that part of the housing which immediately surrounds the bolt and which is threaded for the engagement of the bolt therein. Through the holes 18 and 19 when in register is passed the strap 20 of a seal. The bolt 12 is provided on its external end with a nick to enable it to be turned readily with a screw driver or with any tool adapted to engage in the nick. Preferably, the screw threads are made so loose that the bolt can be readily turned with the thumb nail. By riveting the housing to the corner iron, or making the housing integral with the corner iron, additional strength is attained.
What I claim is 1. A box fastener, having in combination a housing adapted to be secured to the box and provided with a threaded screw hole, a bolt having a threaded portion engaging therethrough, a hasp adapted to engage be tween said housing and the box body and provided with a hole for the engagement of said bolt.
2. In combination with a box having a bolt cavity, a box fastener comprising a housing adapted to be secured to the box and provided with a bolt hole, a. hasp adapted to engage between said housing and the box body and provided with a hole registering with said cavity and the housing hole, a bolt adapted to register with said hole and cavity and means for securing it in the same, and also withdrawn from the cavity and the hasp hole, and a seal provided with a strap passed through said perforations when the same are in register, substantially as described.
3. In a box fastener, the combination of a housing having a threaded hole, a hasp provided with a hole registering therewith, a bolt engaging in said holes and provided with a head engaging between the hasp and housing, said head terminating in a screw bolt engaging in said housing hole.
4. In combination With a housing provided with a bolt holeand a pair of oppositely disposed perforations, a hasp engaging in said housing and provided With a hole registering with said bolt hole, a bolt engaging through said hole provided With a perforation adapted to engage in said above-mentioned perforations, means for securing said bolt in engagement with said liasp and also Withdrawn therefrom. 10
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
