ADJUSTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, WARD S. PERRY and JULIUS 0. E18, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Electric Lamps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of lamps set forth in the prior a plication for patent for reflecting lamps, of Ward S. Perry, (one of the undersigned applicants) filed February 21, 1908, Serial No. 417,050.
The object of this invention is to afford a reflecting electric lamp adapted for use for automobiles of all kinds, launches, and for such other purposes as may be deemed desirable and in which a burner or electric bulb or source of light may be adjusted with reference to the focus of its reflector to enable the maximum utility of the lamp to be attained either when delivering substantially a pencil of light or when difi'using the light in a broad beam.
It is also an object of the invention to afford a construction in which the utmost simplicity of adjustment is aflorded and in which the source of light may be adjusted relatively its reflector without disturbing 0r disarranging any other part of the lamp or opening the lamp.
It is also an object of the invention to afi'ord a construction of the utmost simplicity, strength and durability and in which all the adjustments are effected externally of the lamp.
It is finally an object of the invention to afford in connection with adjustin mechanism for the source of light relatively the reflecting medium, a detent acting at all times to hold the source of light in adjusted position until such adjustment be manually changed.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a lamp embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
. As shown in the drawings: 1, indicates the body of the lamp, which may be constructed of cast, pressed or spun metal, brass being the metal usually employed for that purpose. Said lamp body, as shown, is provided with a rear integral head or end 2, and near the front or open end of said lamp is provided an inner groove or recess adapted to receive the bindin wire 3, as shown in Fig. 1, and against w ich sets the parabolic reflector 4, and which is retained in place by means of a spring binding wire 5, as shown in Fig. 1. Said reflector may be of any suitable metal or material, silvered or otherwise treated to afford the roper parabolic reflecting surface an extending through the axis of said reflector 4, is a flange 25, which extends rearwardly therefrom and is relatively short. Said flange 25, is provided with a slot or groove extending across the inner side thereof at the top of the same and slidably engaged therein is a sleeve 6, having a rib or fin 7, extending longitudinally thereof which extends upwardly into the slot or notch in the flange 25, integral with said reflector. Said sleeve 6, is provided at its inner end with a lamp socket, as shown in Fig. 1, and in which is threaded the electric lamp 8, of suitable candle power. The rear end of said sleeve is provided with an internally threaded plug 9, in which is threaded the adjusting screw 10, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and which is positively engaged through a collar 11, within the back. Said adjusting screw on the outer side of said back of the lam is provided with an actuating wheel 12, rigidly secured on the outer end of said adjusting screw, and as shown, a spring detent 13, is engaged on the back of the lamp in position to engage the notches or corrugations in the adjusting wheel 12. Said bolt or screw extends at its inner end into threaded engagement with the plug 9, in the adjusting sleeve 6, so that rotation of said adjusting screw acts to shift the sleeve carrying the lam or source of light therewith from or tower the focus of said reflector varying the light thereby. As shown also, a sleeve or barrel 14, is connected through the bottom of said lamp and fitted therein and engaged on a non-conducting support 17 are electrical conductors 16, whereby the current is supplied to the bulb.
A cover or door 18, is hinged on the front of the lamp in any suitable manner and acts to maintain the same closed except when manually opened.
The operation is as follows: In assembling the lamp a sufficient length of wire cable or cord 16, is inserted through the insulating plug 17, which is adjust-ably secured in the sleeve 14, by means of a set screw 15, to permit the maximum adjustment of the bulb without bringing stress upon the wires to break the same. If now it be desired to retract the bulb to or beyond the focusor to any desired adjustment the adjusting screw being rotated in the proper direction, said screw threads into the rear end or plug 9, in the sleeve 6, and, inasmuch as said screw is held from advancement on the back of said lamp, the sleeve is drawn toward the back of the lam until the desired adjustment is attaine \Vhen it is desired to move the source of light forwardly from the reflector, the reverse operation occurs. In each instance, the lamp is moved gradually, and, inasmuch as the threads on the set screw are exceedingly fine and of slight pitch, a gradual and very accurate ad ustment is secured not possible with other lamps. In this manner, without opening the lamp the bulb may be adjusted as desired with reference to the reflector to obtain any light effect within the capacity of the lamp. Having once adjusted the lamp as desired, the detent engaging the adjusting wheel firmly holds the same in place until it be again desired to vary the ad ustment.
Of course, details of the construction may be varied. We therefore do not purpose limiting this application for patent otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a lamp havin a closed back, of a. parabolic reflector therein, a short rearwardly directed flange integral with said reflector, a non-rotatable sleeve extending through the flange, a lamp socket in the inner end thereof in advance of the reflector, an axial screw shaft extending into the lamp, and operatively engaging said sleeve and acting to adjust the same with the source of light relatively to the reflector, and an adjustable insulating plug secured to the lamp body in which the wires leading to the lampsocket are secured.
2. In a lamp the combination with a lamp body of an axial screw shaft extending thereinto, a notched adjustin wheel on the outer end thereof, a spring etent for engaging the same, a source of light, a reflector at the rear thereof and partly inclosing the same and a support for the source of light havin threaded engagement with said screw shaft and adapted to be adjusted longitudinally by rotation of the screw shaft.
3. In a lamp a parabolic reflector, a source of light in advance thereof, means for adjustably supporting said source of light, an axial screw shaft engaging said support for said source of light to shift the same relatively the focus of the parabolic reflector, external means for actuatin the screw shaft, and an adjustable insulating plug secured in the lamp body in which the wires leading to the lamp are secured.
4. The combination with a lamp of a parabolic reflector therein, a sleeve extending axially therethrough, a lamp socket in the inner end of the sleeve, an electric lamp bulb therein, a screw shaft extending into the lamp and operatively engaging the sleeve to adjust the same inwardly or outwardly, a sleeve extending upwardly through the bottom of the lamp and an insulating plu therein adapted to afford the connection 0 said lamp with the source of current.
5. The combination with a lamp body of a reflector therein, a rearwardly directed flange integral therewith, a sleeve slidablc through the reflector, a lamp supported at the end of the sleeve in advance of the reflector, and rotative means for adjusting said sleeve and lamp relatively to the reflector.
6. In a lamp of the class described a lamp body, a sleeve slidable through the reflector at the axis thereof, an electric lamp bulb carried on the end of said sleeve, a screw shaft extending through the back of the lamp, a collar thereon at the inner side, an adjusting wheel on the shaft at the outer side of said back and an internally threaded block in the end of said sleeve for engagement with said screw shaft.
7. In a lamp of the class described a lamp body, a sleeve slidable through the reflector at the axis thereof, an electric lamp bulb carried on the end of said sleeve, a screw shaft extending through the back of the lamp, a collar thereon at the inner side, an ad'usting wheel on the shaft at the outer side of said back, an internally threaded block in the end of said sleeve for engagement with said screw shaft, a cylinder secured to, and opening through the side of the lamp adapted to receive a plug connection therein, and an adjustable insulating member in the cylinder in which the wires leading to the lamp are secured.
8. The combination with a lamp of a parabolic reflector therein, a short rearwardly directed flange integral with said reflector, a sleeve extending axially therethrough, a lamp socket in the inner end of the sleeve, an electric lamp bulb therein and a screw shaft extending into the lamp and operatively engaging the sleeve to adjust the same inwardly or outwardly.
9. In a device of the class described a lamp body, a reflector removably secured therein, a rearwardly directed grooved flange integral with the reflector, a ribbed sleeve slidably engaged within the flange and guided thereby, a lamp socket secured within the inner end of the sleeve, an electric bulb secured thereto, an internally threaded plug secured in the outer end of the sleeve and a screw shaft having threaded engagement with the plug and acting to adjust the sleeve with the source of light relatively to the reflector.
10. In a device of the class described a lamp body, a reflector removably secured therein, a nonrotatable sleeve, slldably secured to the reflector, a lamp socket in the inner end thereof in advance of the reflector, an axial screw shaft extending into the lamp and operatively engaging said sleeve acting to adjust the source of light relatively to the reflector, a sleeve extending upwardly through the body of the lamp, an insulating plug adjustable therein and conductors leading therethrough and secured therein and connecting the lamp with the source of current.
11. In a device of the class described, a lamp body, a reflector, an electric lamp adjustable along the axis thereof, a sleeve extending inwardly through the lamp body and an adjustable insulating plug secured therein in which the Wires leading to the lamp are secured.
