Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1911.
Application filed October 11, 1910. Serial No. 586,453.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HAHN, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Charlottenburg, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to windows, and a primary object is to provide a window suitable for roofs or walls inclined from 0 to 90 relatively to the horizontal, adapted to prevent rain or snow entering when open and always to close automatically when not positively held open.
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved window, Fig. 2 shows the same diagrammatically when provided on roofs or walls of various inclination, and Fig. 8 shows the same in perspective.
Referring to the drawing, my window oom prises a wedge-shaped projecting frame or side portion a attached to the wall or roof, and a pane of glass 6 in the top thereof, through which the chamber 0 is lighted. The end or bottom wall (Z of said projecting portion a inclined toward the front has an aperture closed by an inwardly-opening sash g fulcrumed on an axle e and able to be opened by a cord f, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
As will be readily understood from Figs. 1 and 2 rain and snow cannot enter such a window when it is open, whether the roof or wall is horizontal, vertical or at an an gle therebetween, because the rain or snow would have to travel along the path represented by the arrows w-y shown in these figures. It is, of course, supposed that the rain or snow falls perpendicularly or only slightly slantwise because exceptional cases,
say when a Whirlwind drives the snow or rain to and fro, do not come into consideration. Owing to the end wall (Z slanting forward or being horizontal the sash 9 always closes the aperture therein in consequence of its own weight when it is not lifted by the cord The frame a may be built out of the roof or wall or, as represented by Way of example in the drawing, be attached as a special part thereon.
I claim 1. The combination, with a roof or wall having a window opening, of a Wedge shaped frame having a forwardly-slanting or horizontal perforated end wall secured at the window opening, an inwardly-opening sash pivoted on the end wall of the frame and normally closing the one or more apertures in the end wall, and means at tached to the sash and extending through said window opening for lifting the sash from inside the roof or wall, substantially as shown.
2. The combination, with a roof or wall having a window opening, of a wedgeshaped frame having a forwardly-slanting or horizontal end wall having an aperture secured at the window opening, an inwardly-opening sash pivoted to that end of the end wall of the frame farthest removed from the window opening and normally caused by gravity to close the aperture in the end wall, and a cord attached to the end of the sash nearest the window opening and passing through said window opening for lifting the sash and opening said aperture from within the roof or wall, substantially as shown.
FRIEDRICH HAHN.
