To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, AUGUST LAsANoE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' with the pressing plate involve the ordinarystuling joints not constructed for any lateral movement of the parts. It frequently happens that when pressure is applied to the pressing plate, the lack of uniformity of the thickness of the goods under pressure causes the pressing plate to tip or shift in its position, and with an ordinary swivel joint for the steam pipes, the eiect of this is to subject the joints to lateral strain, to weaken them and cause leakage. r V
My invention, therefore, consists of that -certain novel joint for; the steam pipes as hereinafter set forth and claimed, in which lateral as well as rotary movement is provided for the joints.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a steam pressing machine embodying my improvement, with thepresser Vplate in pressingposition. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, with the presser`plat'e raised. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal secjtion of one of the steam pipe jo1nts,`show ing the pipes in one lateral position. lreturn pipe 18 6, on the upper ends of Which,'in suitable bearings, are plvotally mounted on the shaft or rod 7, the lever arms 8, 9, upon the forward ends of which the steam pressing plate 10 is secured. The rear ends of these levers- 8, 9, are pivotally connected by the link 11 to the bell crank foot lever 12, which is pivotally mounted in a suitable casting at the rear of the framework, and carries a foot piece 13 at its forward end. A. coiled spring 14 is connected to the link 11 and to i y the framework near the base, which spring normally tends to hold the pressing plate in upright position as shown in Fig. 2.
When the clothes which are to be pressed arel placed on the heating bed 3, the presser plate 10 is brought down by the handle 15 into lthe position shown in Fig. 1, and then t'o give the proper pressure,` the operator presses on the bell crank lever 12, which tends to raise the outer ends of the lever arms 8, 9, and depress the pressingl plate on to the goods.
The foregoing construction is a construction now in use and forms no part of my present invention.
It is desirable to supply steam to the presser plate 10, and this plate is therefore hollow, and a circulation -of steam is` provided through the inlet pipe 16 and the outlet pipe 17, with which pipes connection is made by the. supply pipe 18 and return pipe 19. ,As
'the pressing plate 10 is `pivotallymounted and is to be brought rapidly from vertical to horizontal position, it is necessary to provide the swivel joint between the pipes 16 and 18 on the one side and 17 and 19 on the other. As already intimated, however,n inasmuch as the clothes to be pressed \are apt to make an 4uneven surface upon the steam bed 3, 1t is desirable to provide not only a pivotal connection for the pipes, but also al 'connect-ion inwhich the pipes can shift laterally. In orderto accomplish this, I provide as follows: 20 is a properly anv L-coupling, provided with a '10o T-coupling, or more 1 flange 21, for securing same by screws or otherwise tothe upperwendof each of the .standards 6. This coupling is provided with a branch extension 22, screw threaded to receive the upper ,end 1of the supply or or 19, and the main body of` the coupling is provided with a, stuffing box -l con'struetion for the reception ofthe pipe 23, with the end of which by the elbow 24 connection is made with the pipe 16 or gland and the lring 28, the packing 30 of.
any suitable material is placedr The coupling 20 is screwthreaded exteriorly at 31 to receive the interiorly threaded stuiiing box nut or cap 32. The tightening of this nut or cap forces the gland 29 down upon the packing 30 and ring 28 which abuts against the flange 25, so as to make a steam tight joint. With this construction, however, the tube 23 can not only rotate in the coupling, but the tube can move laterally within the coupling between the packing ring 28 and lugs 26, and in this way suliicient play is provided for the unequal pressure on the presser plate so that the coupling is freed from strain and consequent leakage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszl. In a pressing machine, the combination with a xed` heating chest for the goods to be pressed, and a pivotally mounted pressing plate, of an inlet and a return steam pipe for the passage of steam to and from the pressing plate, and a swivel joint for each of saidpipes interposed between sections of said pipes, comprising a coupling with iXed connection with one section, and a rotary and a laterally movable connection with the other section to permit both rotary and lateral movement of the pressing plate.
2.- In a pressing machine, the combination with a xed heating chest for the goods to be pressed, and a pivotally mounted pressing plate, of an inlet and a return steam pipe for the passage of steam to and from the pressing plate, and a swivel joint for each of said pipes interposed between sections of said pipes, comprising a coupling with xed connection with one section, and a rot-ary and a laterally movable pipe, c0nnected with the other section, a stuiiing box for said pipe and coupling, comprising a ring and a gland with packing loosely mounted on the pi e, an internal iange in the coupling, a stu ng box nut on the coupling to tighten the packing against the internal flange, a iange on the inner end of the pipe of less diameter than the internal flange of the coupling to permit the pipe to move laterally, and internal lugs on the coupling to limit the movement of the pipe.
