Description

W. J. F. MAIDHOF.
PRINTING FORM.
APPLICATION FILED 001'. 6,1909.

COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH c0., WASHINGTON, D. c.
WILLIAM J. F. MAIDHOF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRINTING-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 6, 1909.
Patented July 18, 1911. Serial No. 521,356.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM J. F. BIATI) nor, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Bronx, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing- Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing forms or plates, with the object in view of providing a form in which the type blocks or engraved plates have a support for their bases, whereby a clearer and more precise printing effect may be obtained, novel means being provided for firmly securing the type blocks or engraved plates to the back plate.
Other objects are to provide a device which will permit the removal of the type blocks or engraved plates, together with the spacing bars; to obviate the necessity of employing the ordinary chase or frame; and to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts whereby the above mentioned objects may be more effectively carried out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of the printing plate, Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the plane of the line D-D of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken in the plane of the line E-E of Fig. 1.
The back plate is denoted by 1 and the spacing bars by 2. The type blocks or engraved plates are denoted by 6 and are provided with recesses 7 which are fitted to receive the lateral projections 8 of the spacing bars 2, for securing the type blocks or engraved plates in position on the back plate 1.
The back plate 1 is provided at its extreme lateral edges with side members 15 which are undercut and secured to the back plate by screws 10. The side members are provided with longitudinal slots 11 in their faces, which slots are adapted to receive screws 12 for clamping the spacing bars 2 in any desired position along said side members 15. The spacing bars 2 have their ends shaped to match the undercut side members 15 and are provided with screw-threaded holes 14 near their ends for receiving the screws 12 which clamp them to the side members ano hence to the back plate.
In operation, the screws which clamp the spacing bars to the back plate may be loosened and the spacing bars separated sufliciently from each other to permit the insertion of the type blocks or engraved plates. When the type blocks or engraved plates have been placed in the desired position, the spacing bars may be manually forced toward each other until they have firmly engaged the type blocks or engraved plates, when the spacing bars may be secured in the position thus obtained by tightening the clamping screws. The type blocks or engraved plates will now be firmly secured to the back plate and the printing form will be ready for the printing operation.
The spacing bars are removable, thus permitting the use of two or more spacing bars on a given back plate, according as it is desired to vary the size of the type blocks or engraved plates used.
It will be seen that this apparatus affords a very convenient means for building up a printing form, and adapts a given form for filling various requirements. Furthermore, the provision of a back plate, in lieu of the ordinary printing chase or frame, affords a firm backing for the type blocks or engraved plates, thus promoting a clearer and more precise printing efiect.
It is to be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the various parts of this apparatus without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the form herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. A printing form comprising type blocks or engraved plates, a back plate therefor having longitudinal side members provided with elongated slots, laterally adjustable spacing bars having their ends in the vertical plane of the said slots, and means engaging the ends of the said bars and the said slots for securing the bars at any point along the slots.
2. A printing form comprising type blocks or engraved plates, a back plate therefor having under-cut longitudinal side members provided with elongated slots in their overhanging portions, and laterally adjustable spacing bars having their ends in the vertical plane of the said slots, and means engaging the ends of the said bars and the said slots for securing the bars at any point along the slots.
3. A printing form comprising typeblocks or engraved plates, a back plate therefor having under-out lm'igitudinal side members In testimony, that I claim the foregoing provided with elongated slots laterally adas my invention, I have signed my name in 10 justahle spacing bars having their ends in presence of two Witnesses, this fourth day the vertical plane of the slots and screws of October, 1909.
having shanks fitted for slidable engage- \VILLIAM J. F. MAIDHOF. ment With said slots and threaded into said Witnesses:
bars for securing the bars at any point along F. GEORGE BARRY,
the slots. HENRY THIEME.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
