Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX WEILER, or ELBnriFELD, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR To FARBENFABRKEN vomvr.
FRIEDR. BAYER & 00., OF ELBERFELD, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OF GEEMANY.
PENTACHLOROBENZALDEHYDE.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX VVEILER, doctor of philosophy, chemist, citizen of the German Empire, residing at Elberfeld, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ientachlorobenzaldehyde, of which the following is a specification.
Lhave found that pentachlorobenzalchlorid (obtainable either by treating benzyl chlorid with chlorin or by treating pentachlorotohlene or pcntachlorobenzyl chlorid with chlorintcan be converted into the hitherto unknown pentachlorobenzaldehyde concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid.
In order to illustrate the new process more Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J uly' 18, 1911. Application filed April 11, 1911. Serial N0. 620,427.
I fully the following example is given, the
parts being by weightl:A mixture of 10 parts of pentachlorobenzalchlorid with 50 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid is stirred at about 00-100 C. until the evolution of hydrochloric acid ceases. The aldehyde is obtained in a pure state by pouring the mass of the reaction on ice. It is a white powder ,casily soluble in benzene but not so easily soluble in alcohol. It crystallizes in long needles melting at 197199 C.
I claim The herein described pentachlorobenzaldehydc being a white powder easily soluble in benzene and melting at l97199 (1., substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v MAX WEILER. 1,. s.]
